Okay, here it goes.

I am thinking of taking my 7-08 out for wild dogs. Is a 120gr Vmax gonna make a mess of the pelt? Are there some 120gr bullets in 7mm that would perform well without making a mess?

Your experiences please..
 
no field experience but the 120 Vmax do shoot well in my new 280 on paper @ 3200 fps

280_ackley used them last winter in his 280 Improved and said for the most part they were actually fur friendly. I didnt get to see any pelts of his first had, because the day we went out together, he missed! :p a couple times ;)
 
I use th 95gr Vmax in 6.5. Great accuracy, devastateing to coyotes, ravens, magpies and crows amongst others.
Personally, I would never skin out a stinky coyote for the going rate of the pelts. The Vmax bullets make the pelts unsalvageable, unless you can hit them on the breast bone. But they certainly do make them dead on contact. bearhunter
 
Pretty much any any bullet out of a 7-08 is going to do a complete pass through and make some mess. V-Max would be the absolute worst and a standard lead nose spitzer would most likely be best. Id look for a bullet thats going to expand very little while passing through the coyote.
 
I've used the 110 grain V-Max loaded to about 3200 fps in my .270. From what I've seen on groundhogs I'd expect hideous exit wounds on a coyote.

That heavy of a bullet on a coyote depending on where you hit it would do some serious pelt damage. A broad side shot you will most definately have a pass though. And as some previous post have stated the V-max is not a real pelt friendly bullet.
