Im just starting into reloading slugs. Using HS6, 1oz cast lee slugs and WAA12 wads, im finding that some powder is getting past the wad and sitting in the dead space. This is causing some primer pops (half the time the wad clears, and the other half, the wad/slug stay stuck in the barrel) as there isnt enough powder for the primer to ignite it properly.

What is causing this and how can I remedy it?

Try out different wads with the hulls you are using, there are slight tolerance variations amongst different brands.

I'm loading the 1oz lee cast slugs in a federal gold medal hull, with the WAA12 wad, but i'm using 32.5 grains of unique instead HS6, and i've had no issues. Maybe try a different powder? What hull are you using?

I have given up reloading slugs into anything but AA hulls. I had the exact same experience when loading cheep bulk hulls.

Lee 1oz slug, Fed Red wad, AA hull, 34.0 gns of HS6, Star crimp.

OP- Federal hulls are straight walled, the WAA12 is designed for tapered hulls(Win AA, Rem STS, etc); that's why you're getting powder migration.
If you have some Win AA hulls, use a WIN 209 primer, 32gr HS-6, WAA12 wad; this is one of my intermediate power loads.

Some powder migration can be normal and hard to avoid, but it should never be so serious that it's causing the issues you are having. Almost like there is something else going wrong here.

I don't see where in your post you mention what hulls you are using.

I use Blue Dot for Slug loads. That stuff can get pretty mental in the performance department.

I prefer Fed hulls for those kinds of loads. Specifically ones of the high brass variety. I use Claybuster equv 12S0 wads to match, but sometimes because the powder charge is so great, you need a shorter wad. In which case I use WAAF114 or WAA12R wads which tho' they are AA wads, are also designed for straight wall cases. You may notice that Winchester slug and buckshot high brass hulls are straight walled.

If you want a shorter alternative to the 12S0 without going to the AA wads, might I suggest you try the 12S4? They make a dandy slug load!

I'll keep it in mind. Never seen them tho'. I limited myself to what was commonly available at my local supply. Lots of the ones I mentioned and they worked well.
