A bit of a shotgun newbie...

I recently bought a 870 Wingmaster off the EE with the intention of packing while scouting for Island blacktail this summer either with shot for bunny stew or slugs for hangry bears and then put in the OE 30" full choke barrel for ducks/geese/skeet/trap. I planned to grab a Norinco barrel and be groovy but am thinking my plan may be a little flawed... does the longer barrel shoot more than better enough to make up for the convenience of packing the short barrel?

Anyone pattern a 12.5" mod choke vs a 18.5" cyl (or other choke)? Bunny stew or leaded lettuce at 10y? 25y?

Is the *massive* Norinco front post anywhere near the right height for any of the aftermarket rear ghost sights?

Any difference at all in getting a good sight picture between the two? What range does the longer barrel make more sense?

The Wingmaster currently has a 30" full choke, so my options are too buy a 12.5" barrel and keep the 30" (perhaps ream the full choke to a modified or improved?) or cut down the current barrel to 18.5" and buy a 28" barrel with removable chokes. My only other shotgun is Winchester 20ga semi with a 28" mod choke that my Dad gave me that I've yet to shoot.

Thanks!

Your 30'' barrel shouldn't have steel shot put through it. Only non-toxic shot like Hevi-Shot for waterfowl would be safe in that older barrel. 18.5'' - 22'' would be a good compromise length, short enough for the bush but long enough to get some swing for birds.
