12Ga Blackpowder

Alright, I'm brand new to reloading and don't know anythign about it. I have the shotgun mentioned here:

I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for loading ammo for it, I've called a couple relatives who own firearms and they didn't have much to say. I figure you guys are much more knowledgeable, I might as well ask.

I'm guessing getting materials will be simple enough, but as far as recipies for loading and tips on what material (brands and such) you guys are my best bet

First make sure that you know the chamber length. Lots of the oldies were 2 1/2 rather than the more standard 2 3/4.

I like to use brass shells but you can use any kind that are the right length. A set of Lee hand tools is handy or you can use a press if you have one or want to load greater volumes.

Here are a few older threads on this topic. If you search for more make sure that you change it to look farther back than a week which is the default and trips people up.

I use a Lee Load all II for 12ga to resize the brass of my plastic hull/shell and reprime. I cut the crimped part of the hull off so it is only 2.5 inch or so. I add 100gr of Goex FFg powder and then cut my own cardboard wads, stack in shell and add 1oz of shot then a thin wad over top and seal with wax. You can buy better matterials for the wads and sealing but this is what I have used so far. With brass shells you can buy an RCBS Cowboy die or some shells need no sizing.


The hand operated Lee Loaders for 12ga etc are around on eBay here and there but go for a bit more money than they used to since they are no longer made. They were also made under the name Mequon.
