12ga greener police shotgun advise (pics)

The Greener 14G Police gun was especially designed for Colonial Police Service. It had a unique Cartridge and firing pin which would prevent use of commonly available ammunition in the event that the "native" ran off with his issue weapon. They were used in Egypt, Cyprus and Hong Kong amongst others. This gun shows the hard life it has had but she is mechanically sound and no pitting in the bore.

The only anomaly here is that this greener is a 12ga not 14ga.
Who used these or converted these as a 12ga shotgun?

This model is a 12ga and is so marked.

Have one almost exactly like that, it also shoots 2.75" 12 guage.

I've got one it came from collector's source. Interesting thing about it was that when I got it there was a grain of sand stuck in the butt plate screw, the butt showed some wear(parade ground?) at the toe. Otherwise it's in good condition. I've got to shoot it one of these days.

I have seen them in both 12 and 14 guage. You can form the 14 guage police shells out of 12 guage Winchester AA shells using a heated die (heat in boiling water). Ordinary field grade shells will collapse but the AA shells form nicely.

I tried chambering an antique 12 guage dbl for the police shell so that it would be exempt from registration. The chamber liner and reformed shells worked fine but the pattern was worse than open :>( so I ended up returning the gun to normal configuration.

If memory serves me, these were manufactured in 12, 13, and 14 gauge. My 14 gauge actually has 3 tips to the firing pin. When fired, all 3 tips must protrude from the breech block face or it will not fire. In order for this to work, the original brass shells had a deep groove machined around the primer pocket to allow the outer 2 tips to travel far enough to let the middle tip hit the primer. This was another little trick to stop the "natives" from using these guns against the "non natives" - standard commercial ammo just went "click". My father has a Greener 12 gauge that was either made for retail or very nicely converted, and marked on the side of the action is "Gaffer Gun". Very interesting guns.

I believe that Rocky Mountain Cartridges makes full brass reloadable cases for these, complete with proper groove so no alteration is necessary to the rifle.
Also they can supply a nice simple shotshell reloading kit which is fairly inexpensive as well. Nice people to deal with as well.

Unless I am mistaken the 3 piece firing pin is made of two components and the extra two pins can be removed fairly easily as a sort of ring with 2 projections. That permits the use of flat base shells. I also think that at least some of the guns have already had the extra pins removed.

Myanmar(Burma) police were using these very recently.

Many of these were from Egypt.
The necked 12/14ga shells were manufactured late enough that there are plastic ones around.
Greener made sporting guns on the same action. The "GP" is one example.
If so desired, it is easy enough to rebarrel one with a 12ga. barrel. No permanent changes are involved.
