Id like to find the powder and shot locally (lowermainland BC) First entry.

Phew. I cannot help you with that one you may be in the same situation as me on the other end of this country

Nova Scotia the stuff doesn't exist for the most part
I have to get my powder ( 4 pounder of STEEL ) and primers in Ontario from Hummasons
Wads and shot in sask TNT Gun works
Hulls state side Gun broker min 500 at a time and have Prophet river take care of them for me to get them to canada legally

I used to guide duck and goose hunting just after steel shot became mandatory. All I can say is everyone jumped on the long shot shell bandwagon but the best steel shot was still 2 3/4" moving fast. I have shot cases of both 3" steel and 2 3/4" steel and love the 2 3/4" Kent Faststeel and Federal Steel loads. Have seen guys with 3 1/2 inch steel bragging about their long shots but I was doing same thing with 2 3/4. Only 2 sizes needed in steel shot shell, #4 and #2. BB is overkill for geese unless your aiming at body and not head. A couple # 2's in the head or neck of a goose and it drops! Field or water it works....
Not sure if this helps with your reloading components but I hope it does. I have a Hornady Apex that will load steel and if I do I will load 2 3/4 inch hulls in number 4 to 2 steel. JMHO

If you guided you know it all depends on your set up and who is in the blind with you. Over decoys some I could kill with a stick
Yes I have taken groups that could kill everything I placed in front of them with 2 3/4 but most could not hit the side of a barn even if I gave them all 10ga's at 20 yards
3" has always been the size I have recommended to groups 4 or 2 for ducks and BB for geese since with more pellets out there from a 3" the better chance some my fluke a bird. If we are set up doing pass shooting at longer yardage no 2 3/4 made will kill like a 10ga does
I have never been a fan of 3 1/2 12ga own a few but if I need a 3 1/2 it will be a 10ga in my hands normally and there are set ups where the 10ga is required even in fields
I have been reloading steel since the second year lead was banned all RSI loads all high speed and to this day no factory steel ammo I have tried to date can pattern or kill as they do and that includes 12ga 3" and 3 1/2 and 10ga . I don't reload 2 3/4 steel any more nor do I guide now
JMHO

Well...I since lead was banned I quit shooting at waterfowl anything over 40 yards.....which is long with a full speed duck crossing. I began to rely on decoying and calling. I also only guaranteed hunt that they would be put in a shooting position to shoot. If they cannot shoot properly....not my fault...got sick of chasing, and my dog retrieving, cripples. It is just my opinion...but 2 3/4 inch steel is the fastest loaded and still prefer speed with steel....yes still have a case of 3' and will use it. I've yet to see a goose that cannot be dumped with #2 steel 40 yards and within. Of course it took me awhile to explain to some when shooting at geese "LOOK AT THE WHITES ON THEIR CHEEKS NOT THE BODY".

Cool that is what works for you and where you hunt. It is 90% long pass shooting here , regardless of calling or decoys mostly over water and if we had to take everything within 40 yards we would not be shooting at many birds
That is why the 10ga has a place in my gun rack and paper pretty much tells me what size shot and choke
To each their own
Cheers

...I shoot a lot of ducks...I reload for the fastest load possible...load weight be hanged! 2 3/4" still rules the early season and now that I shoot 10's I go with a fast 10 load later...

thanks for the post

...just looked up my most recent receipts...10 years ago... - .08/primer, .16/ powder, .10/wad, .26/steel - price per load (not counting hulls) = $.56 ...i have enough to last 1,000 rounds

...just checked yesterday at the local shooting shop...kent = $24/box for 3" 12 ga. duck loads

...not quite half the price, but will be soon i suspect

...and 10 gauge is a whole other universe of savings

I have some #2 steel shot in stock, also some 12ga wads. Anything else I can order in from my supplier. If you are looking for specific powder, shot or wads, I can check with my supplier to see what they have in stock.

Regards, Henry

Hi Henry

For powder most of us use alliant STEEL, wads BP or sam1 which really doesn't have a true distributor in canada any more

Cheers

Hi 3macs1
Ok, I'll bring in some Alliant Steel 1 lb'ers. Unfortunatly I can't get Sam1 wads. Which wad by BPI would you use?

Regards, Henry

Hi Henry
I don't use BP but others do here. I am a sam1 guy
The last time I spoke to the guys who make the sam1 they were looking for a distributor in canada since they lost wholesale sports
May be worth a call
Cheers
