I was at my 50 yard indoor range with my Mossberg M590-A1 14" shooting 1.oz rifled slugs at human sized targets with super accuracy. A guy came over to check it out...he told me that my 14" 590 would NOT reach out to long range...

So, I was curiouos. Yesterday I headed out to Silverdale's 200 yard out door range (to shoot my M1 Garand for the 65 anniversay of D-DAY). I also brought my Mossberg M590-A1 14" and 5 boxes of Remington High-Velocity 7/8 oz rifled slugs at a sizzling 1,800 fps:eek: WOW

First I fired 5 slugs at 100 yards with 4 shots hitting the page (human sized targets) I was very Impressed. I fired 5 slugs at 200 yards and 3 slugs hit the page:eek: one of them dead-center (the other two a little low; but still hit)

I was wondering, how far can a rifled 7/8 rifled slug at 1,800 fps fired from a 14" M590-A1 reach out and touch the target (accurately and consistantly) I'm guessing maybe 400 yards is very possible.

Anybody fire their shotguns at extreme ranges???
How far do you guys think is the maximun range a 12GA slug can reach out???

(Sorry no pics, forgot my camera )

I've taken a deer at over 300 yards with a sabotted 1 oz, 3 inch slug from my rifled mossberg. It was a crazy long shot that would not repeat unless it was the last day of the season again. :)

Slugs drop a lot but have huge energy even at longer ranges. Most of the deer I have taken with my shotty have been at 200 yards or less and I've only ever retrieved 2 slugs (from literally dozens of kills since I can get 3 per year here). The vast majority of kills with slugs are through and throughs.

I was firing handloads of Lee 1 oz slugs out to 175 yards with a 24" Rifled barrel Out of as Mossberg 500. After correcting for drop, I was putting every round on target. I was firing at an old refrigerant tank. Same height as a propane tank, but abiout half as wide.

it has been my expierience that slugs are very underrated...especially by those that are too afraid of the recoil to find out how good they actually are.....

With good sights on a slug gun 200 yards is possible for heavy hitting slugs, but the accuracy is not there for a humane hunt. The accuracy for slugs at that distance if you are good will be around 20" in my opinion. This area is too wide for humane kills.

keep your slugs to 100 and you're good.

I have hit a 32" X 48" target at 382 yards with my Dlask 14" barrel. I was just plinking and I want to try it aagain under more control to see if I can do it consistently. At that distance the slug basically bounced off of the log supporting the target.

Guys, you gotta specify if you are talking a rifled barrel/choke or a smoothbore. Big difference to long range accuracy.

I was using 2 3/4" Federal and Winchester foster style slugs (the cheap ones) and of course the Dlask barrel is cylinder bore 14"
