130 grainers in the m14

Since playing with this m14 for the last month and a half and not even shot it yet I have been thinking. What load should I try in it??

Finally decided on a 130 hornady sitting on top of ohhh sayyyyy...4198,3031 or 4064. Keeping the velocity down to about 2900-3000 FPS. It will primarily be used on paper,gophers and the odd yoodle puppy.

What do you guys think?? Should'nt beat up the rifle to badly and no real high pressure loads....:50cal:
 
Norc barrel twist is 1 in 12" from what I've been told. Also told 150gr are the bullet of choice for hunting...that being said, would 130s be a smidge light?
I remember running 80something grainers thru my 1913 6.5x55 swede and had it keyholing at some rediculous distance like 40 yrds.
But hey...I don't really know big caliber stuff...maybe 130s will work with a reduced powder charge.
 
I ran 5 rounds loaded with 110 grain Speer RN through my Norc, shot OK, recoil was pretty much nil but with the exception of one the action didn't cycle fully, had to reload with the op-rod handle each time. 130 might cycle be enough to operate OK although I have never tried it. Post your results, I am interested as I have three boxes of 125 grain 308 I might try to load for reduced recoil loads.

Not really lookin for a reduced powder charge/recoil load.Just lookin for a load to smack some puppies with.Rick I used to own a handfull of 6.5 x 55 rifles and had about 300 80 to 85 grain hollow point slugs for it loaded up.The 6.5 rifling should be set up for 130 to 140 grain slugs if I remember right. I found the same thing,accuracy sucked big time...its like loading a 100 grain slug in a 30-06 and hoping it will work...so there fore...

If the m14 s is designed for a 147 grain slug I am only 17 grains under the suggested bullet weight...shouldnt be a problem to stabilize it me thinks...The biggest thing this will be used on is a yote...If and when I ever get back into deer hunting the .308 stays home and I will take out the .340 WBY...

As for recoil...well Rick you know it doesnt bother me as you have seen...just thinking that sending out a 130 grain slug out of a .308 should work real good...150 grain will come out of a 30-06 if I want to go that way with it...
 
Like holleyman said too. Reduced charge with light bullet might no cycle the action. But I suppose you could always just use it single shot.
Yeah..recoil aint a big deal for someone using .460s and 416s on gophers eh? lol.

Rick I am not looking for a reduced load/or charge...here is what I am thinking...308 does not have a great velocity so there fore drop down to a 130 grain slug for use on a target that at the most will weigh about 80 pounds or so_Or a squeak that weighs about as much as a full popcan and is the same size.

If there is any reduced load its just so that I dont beat the hell out of the m14 action.I have a bunch of 220 grain slugs sitting her also which would be fun to play with ....but if its gonna beat the action up and wreck the rifle...naww I dont want to do that to it.I bought this just as a plinking toy and fun gun,not a mainline hunting rifle.I have way better calibres for that.

I think that the light bullet will cycle the action just fine as long as I keep the op pressure up around the 7.62x51 pressure. I have no intention to hot rod this rifle so as not to start busting parts of it.

Mostly what I was wondering from other members in this forum is that if they have loaded 130 grain slugs how did they work?? Great powders to use for that slug?? Etc Etc...
 
Well, I dunno if you have a Hornady loading book or not.

They only list the following powders for 130gr SP and SSP...most potent starting at the top.
