1301 - anyone try bear bangers or rubber slugs?

OK, I have actually done this - rubber slug, followed by buckshot, followed by Foster slug. The rubber round does not have enough energy to cycle the action BUT haul back the handle and she'll eject the hull, load the buckshot and you're off to the races. How to actually do it. Chamber load the rubber slug, then load the mag with what you want. Incidentally, the rubber slug will load from the tube because loading from the mag is a function of the dimensions of the cartridge, not its power. It won't eject, but it will do everything else.

Thanks. The rubber loads don’t cycle the action enough to cause a jam then? Have you tried any other low/no recoil rounds like bangers, flares, etc?

Appreciate your first hand experience.

In an ideal sensible world a Benelli M3 would fill both your needs. Semi-auto, but can be converted to pump action with a simple twist of a lever at the front of the magazine tube. Another quick twist and you're back to semi auto again. Sadly they banned that shotgun decades ago as being too black and evil for the general population. Police would use the dual capability for shooting specialty 12 ga rds. like CN, pepperspray, bangers, etc., which wouldn't cycle the Benelli's semi-auto action action. Then turn it back into a semi-auto with a simple turn of the switch.

Sorta like the Franchi SPAS-12 dual use 12ga semi-auto_ pump action but much simpler in design. That SPAS-12 has been used in numerous Hollywood films like Jurassic Park, Terminator series. There apparently is a CDN legal(don't know if it's banned now too) Franchi-based semi-auto shotgun.

My thoughts. Typically the shell stop is not activated until the bolt has traveled the majority of the way back. And typically very low power ammunition does not move the bolt very far. In all likelyhood it would bounce the bolt back a bit and rechamber the spent hull. Racking it manually should cycle the next round after ejecting the spent hull. I see NFG has confirmed this with real life. Cool. So the only other concern is manual of arms, not something you struggle with as an experienced shooter. Low chance of ####ing your pants and fumbling shells dealing with a bear when you're trained and used to dealing with bears. They're rarely as scary as the internet makes them out to be lol.

Until they’re not. Which is why you would be using bear bangers and rubber slugs in the first place. In that case the KISS principle is the best. Pumps are still the easiest and most reliable when using non standard loads. If it’s close enough you need a rubber slug, it’s already too close to be fumbling with anything. In the time it takes you to change your grip, manually jack out a round, re acquire your grip. A bear can cover a lot of ground

To be honest I would fully load it with slugs. If you want to try scare it, put one in the dirt in front of it and go from there
