The Dealer messed up

When you pointed out the mistake they agreed to fully refund you.

Cannot imagine that their master plan is to "bait and switch" clients and this is likely an isolated incident.

Move on. #### happens.

I'm of the opinion that this kind of thing was a mistake. If you don't want to deal with them again, then fine - take the refund. I personally would probably just switch it out for a Gen4.

Mistake, possibly. But I would never deal with them again. I am even a bit suspect of the "mistake" as they were willing to tell you that some don't come with extra grips etc. Which clearly was garbage. The real test is what did they do to make it right? Long drive to look at the pistol and then it's not only the one you didn't pick out but not even the right product and in the box for the right product... Plus they wrote down the info while you were there to start the transfer... And what did they offer to make this right? A true mistake and they would be doing everything they can to make up for their screw up. Instead you get denial and cover up followed by just a refund to make you go away. Smacks of them getting caught trying to pull a fast one. Makes one wonder how many times this has happened before.

The box serial number and description should match the gun, if it didn't look tampered with. The problem occurred at Glock.

you would think when they gave you your receipt for the layaway, the serial number would have been listed on it.

Sounds a bit too suspicious to me, as they knew you drove a distance to them, and was a newer shooter.

just my thoughts

There are two Gen 4 G17 models. The early ones do not have the option of beaver tail grips, the latter ones do. A gen 3 is substantially different from the gen 4, extra (and type of) grips {back straps} aside.
Gen 4 has an enlarged magazine release compared to the gen 3.
Gen 4 has a completely different handle angle compared to the gen 3.
Gen 4 has a completely different texture compared to the gen 3.
I've also seen Gen 4 range kits that only come with 2 mags, some with 3...whether the dealers are gathering mags to sell separately or what's the deal there I'm not sure. But I have seen them for sale with 2 mags.

I have managed a major retail store for 19 years. It is a smaller national retailer with an intimate, relationship building approach to sales. In that time, even though I run a pretty tight ship, mistakes have happened like this.
Number of times they were intentional? ZERO. Number of times I got up in the morning and thought to myself, "Self, how can we screw people today for our own personal gain"? ZERO. Number of times we get accused of lying and intentionally trying to screw people? Almost every time any mistake happens. And even at times where nothing at all went wrong in the interaction. And every time I think to myself "I hope to catch you in an alley behind a bar one night".

The thing I have always hated about sales is having the stigma of stereotypical salespeople. I live in a relatively small community, and a bad reputation will sink you. You get accused of lying often enough because people have this weird mistrust of any retail business without actually giving them a reason to.

Sounds like a mistake happened. Sounds like they made it right. Accusing a person of dishonesty without hard proof and when there is doubt is an awfully bold step. However when given the freedom of the internet and the anonymity it brings, it happens more and more which only fuels people's mistrust.

There are dishonest retailers out there I am sure. But assuming everyone is like that is like saying every person that owns a gun is a criminal because criminals often have guns.

But one thing I can tell you. If a customer returns to my store after a mistake has happened with them, and they handled it with grace, the service seems to step up an extra notch for them going forwards.

I am not saying the OP was accusing anyone of anything. Just a thought...

is

OP; what I'm trying to tell you is that despite what packaging may or may not say, and despite what the dealer may or may not tell you, a Gen 3 Glock is a very different looking and feeling firearm to the Gen 4...there is no mistaking them for one another. (Glock does not make a 1911, and can't be mistaken for one.)

Like I said, there are two versions of the Gen 4 G17. One with beaver tail back straps and one that does not. The kit I bought when the Gen 4 G17 first came out had 3 mags and two back straps (med. Large) as well as cleaning kit, dis-assembly tool and fired brass. Instructional Booklet, and warranty card. I have seen the exact kit sold as brand new with two mags at a slightly lower price.

My Glock is Austrian roll marked.
