I need to find some 14.5mm ammunition to feed a big milsurp russian gun I recently acquired... Now, one can't import these from the USA because of their export laws but can one import some from abroad as an individual? I know where I could get some ammo from europe (not explosive or incendiary of course) but is it an ITAR type ammunition??

So you bought Stencollectors PTRS, did you? I bought his PTRD about two months ago, and I'm still trying to source out ammo.
Apparently, Royal Sportsman in Burnaby BC is trying to bring in some. Same old story, it will be here soon. I had a phone conversation with the guy at Martstar about 10 years ago, when I was thinking of getting either a PTRD or PTRS. Back then, he said he had a line on some, just a matter of getting it shipped to Canada. It must have taken the slow route, because it hasn't arrived yet.

OK, it seems I nned to make things clearer: I KNEW that exporting ammunition from the USA was VERBOTEN nowadays (see my original post way up there...)

BTW, I don't see why the links to the US sites and companies was deleted... It was just information on the subject of 14.5mm ammo, not any evil plot to break any (stupid) law... Looks like self-censoring-PC-bull#### to me... Anyways, it still does not answer my questions: can someone import some 14.5mm ammo as an individual? If not, is there a canadian company out there that could if the ammo was available for sale in Europe? And finally, anyone out there with a round or two he could sell??

Shrapnel,
It's not forbidden to import ammo from the States, if you do it right. You need a Canadian import permit for it, which allows you to get the required US export permit. That's the legal way.

As for other countries, I have no idea. As long as you satisfy their export requirements, it should be the same as from the US.

Stevo, I was under the impression that .50 caliber ammunition as well as any ammunition that falls under the "destructive device" caliber range in the US was banned from export from the USA except for military sales...

But thanks for the info about the import permit; I will check it out. I know that an individual can bring into Canada up to 5000 rounds of ammunition without an import permit but I was wondering if that applies to 14.5mm ammunition as well because of it's size.

First off, sorry if I came across too heavy. Not my intention. I'm not a big fan of PC censorship, so I hope it didn't appear to be just that.

Shrapnel raises an interesting point that I have been wondering about. Yes, the US has stopped all exports of anything related to 50 BMG. Thats why we can't get Serbu guns, but Austrian Steyr 50's are available.

But what about other larger calibres? Is it as Shrapnel says, 50 cal AND ABOVE that is banned? There are places in the states that have a lot of surplus 20mm components for sale CHEAP. Anyone know the status of that for sure?

One again, I didn't mean to piss in anyones Cornflakes, I was just trying to relay info for others reading this post. All good. :)

Shrapnel,
I forgot about that. It may only apply to .50, but not larger calibers like the 14.5. I'm not very familiar with the ITAR or US policy. Someone like KevinB could probably give you a better answer on import from the States.

I don't believe there is any distinction in calibre for Canadian importation.

I don't think the gusy at Big sky will ship to Canada. I tried to get a few collectors items from them but they always said no.

I had the same problem with Old Western Scrounger out of Californian when buying 12.7 Russian ammo.
They told me it was just to much of a problem witch is a shame because they did want to make a sale.

I seem to recall that the USA stopped the export of any ammunition or components bigger than .500, some kind of weapon of mass destruction thing. I read this in an article about the 500 Smith and Wesson, supposidly that is why S&W chose .500 for the size of the bore on their new handgun, also if I remember correctly 50 BMG has a bore dia of .510 eliminating exports.

good luck on finding casing for the 14.5, check with big sky in spokane
you ll need an import permit and a big wallet

if you need a press and dies, contact ch4d
