14.5mm Russian, legal?

The problem is even if you manage to get brass and primers what are you going to do about powder?

I guess you could rig it to use bmg primers, but

Thats way overbore compared to the bmg, you would need even slower powder than the 20mm uses
Unless your a case half full of way too fast powder kind of guy

I guess you could machine some really light brass bullets and with V20n29 get a full house load, but from what I understand solids start to foul the bore pretty bad above 3000fps

Unfortunatly it looks like the best you can do is very expensive, time consuming half power loads with less than ideal components

The surplus powder that Hodgdon packaged and sold as H4831 was used in US 20mm ammunition.
There are various slow burning powders that would no doubt work,

I can't speak for the 14.5 but I do shoot a 20x138B which is significantly larger and running Vit 20n29 lit up with a CC!#35 gets me over 2800 FPS with a 3000 gr solid turned projectile.
Fouling is not bad at all as these have drive bands on the bullets. Expensive, yes. Time consuming, yes. Less than ideal, not so much.

20x138B is my next endeavor. I sourced about 80 pieces of new manufacture brass and 200 machined vulcan projectiles. Just need to source the press and dies still. Did you ever make progress with your press for the 20mm you were talking about last year rick?

I have the action plans completed and am working on the chassis design currently.
Being that this will be a very small run to a very limited market I did not see a ton of urgency to get these done.
So far only 2 people have committed to buying a rifle.

^ it has happened to a lot of us. I was around for marstars import of the PTRS and PTRD rifles. I had just started buying my own firearms and was ready to drop money when I was pretty much talked out of it by guys who convinced me I'd never get to shoot the thing. I should have bought it anyways...

Wolverine actually had the PTRS and PTRD before Marstar advertised them. Wolverine was going to rebarrel the PTRDs into 50BMG, but once the guns got here, it proved to be a bit more complicated than they had hoped, so they sold them as is. I headed out to Wolverines to buy a PTRD, but when John showed me the PTRS, I decided to go for that instead. John had given me a price if I bought one of each, which I initially turned down. But as Pat was doing the transfer on the PTRS, I did the math in my head and realized I would only be paying $1,250 more if I bought the PTRD as a bundle, so I ended up driving home with both.

I only had a Honda accord at the time, and while the PTRS was no problem (the barrel comes off with a pin), the PTRD ended up running from the back of the trunk up over the shifter.

I eventually sold both guns once I got my Boys rifle. Far better craftsmanship on the Boys ATR.

Yeah where can one purchase the ammo?

You basically cannot as almost all military ammo is of a explosive loaded tip variety and prohibited being as it was originally designed as anti tank/material. Most people into this caliber pick up fired steel casings and cast or machine bullets then work up loads from internet info---Dieseldog!
