14" 870 barrels-how does the verifyer know?

so essentially, an unscrupulous person could buy a whole whack of 18.5" Remington or 28" Norinco barrels, shop 'em all down to 14", repark them, and sell them as real 14" barrels and basically no-one, not even the RCMP, would be able to say for certain thye weren't bought new that way.

Kinda makes you wonder if the feds could ever prosecute on this law unless the saw-off was REALLY obvious...???
 
Or, if a barrel was a brand new replacement, and had never been installed on a firearm, and it was shortened commercially prior to retail sale, what would its legal status be? Its been established that a machine gun receiver, which was never assembled into a firearm, can be remanufactured as semi auto, and not be classed as a CA.
 
Careful about skating around the thin edge of legality; they only have to catch someone out once to make that person's life Hell. Never worth it!
