Ok well some of you might flame, but I'm prepared.
I've been bitten by the HP9-1 bug big time (I can't afford the real thing:redface:)
Well I've got a few shot guns now, but nothing under 20" bbl, and I would really like to know what I can shoot with a 14"bbl?
I'd mainly use it as my camping and hicking companion, maybe even as an all around gun.
What do all of you use this short bbl'ed setup for in real world environments?
What is the practicality of owning such a toy?
In other words, what's it good for?
Much thanx,

You can do anything with a 14" gun that you can do with a 20" except take it to the United States.

They are compact, easier to stow and less obstrusive. The downside is more muzzle flash and noise.

I use mine for predator control.

I use mine on the action outdoor local range!! 3 inch shells with 000 buck cuts targets in half!! they are alot of fun. Like to shoot alot of slugs with them to.

Downside:
They cost more, they cause more noise, they have more blast, they have less velocity, and with less sight radius they are less accurate (try shooting flying objects at 40 yards)

Upside:
?

Most 14" guns are cylinder choked and cylinder is too open to hit a flying target at 40 yards.

My 14" is fixed modified choke and I've shot clays with it. Lead perceptions with a shorter gun are different but with a little practice I can hit 40 yard targets with mine.

believe it or not, I agree with you...I actually prefer 18.5"...although I won't deny the "coolness" factor of the shorter ones (which are, of course, more maneuvarable in tight confines like "house clearing")

14" is for close in work. It's very compact and fast to point.

Mine is for animal protection and looking cool. :p It's fast to point and puts 5 slugs into a group the size of my fist at 35 meters as fast as I can shoot it.

I don't own one but I think a shorti is the MOST POWERFUL look weapon, A lot of club member own them and have fun with them. make me itching. Look forward to buy one.

Try whipping a 28" around a 3-gun match. Same deal as AR15s. Shorter weapons point better and move faster. Long guns are more clumsy but facilitate better range.

You don't use a screwdriver when you need a spanner. Right tool for the job.

For me it is the same reason they came out with the S&W 44 mag Mountain Gun or the Ruger 454 Alaskan ... compactness and the increased maneuverability. I use it for wild animal protection while at work and play, it is a particular tool for a particular job. That said I wouldn't go duck hunting with it. Mine is actually a 12.5" barrel and the 7.5" barrel difference is very noticeable in thick coastal BC bush, like night and day.
Accuracy with the bead is fine (four rounds touching each other at 25m) and I personally don't notice the difference in recoil. For hunting bears I use my 20" sighted barrel but for protection I use the short one.

Cheers

Is "house clearing" a task normally assigned to most "normal" people?

I think they're dumb and mostly appeal to mall ninjas with a full length mirror. :D

The correct answer is, because you can.

It is best not to be defining what is a "normal" person is, you obviously aren't qualified.

House clearing isn't on my agenda however the short barrel did come in handy while going into the tight confines of a barn when we weren't sure what was causing the loud scratching noise.

If you need a compact shotgun for boat, plane or vehicular use then a 14" shotgun is infinitely superior to a pistol grip only shotgun with an 18-1/2" barrel.

And they're actually fun to shoot and god forbid you or anyone else would consider having fun dumb. If it doesn't appeal to you then don't get one but why criticize people who actually see a practical use for a 14" gun?
