14" or 18"

Shotguns main problem is limited ammo capacity, and 14 inchers reduce that capacity even more. Besides, 18 inch shotguns are compact already.

A 14" with a +1 extension gives you 5 shots of 12G... In my part of the world, I have yet to use more then 2 rounds to deal with a 'problem' ;)

If the OP is expecting bigger problem, he might to make sure his friends can help out if the need be...

Is there currently an affordable source for the 14" barrels? I have recently started scouring the web and it seems everyone who sells the short barrels is sold out. I see a few on the EE commanding a premium. Looks like if it is under 18" the price goes unreasonably high.

Honestly one of each doesn't go wrong. I have 18" barrels with ghost rings and irons for slugs, and 14" with a bead for buck or slugs. If I could only have one, it would be 14 though.

14" all the way. I like my 14" 870P because it has a MOD choked barrel. Not a big fan of 'cylinder' personally. That being said, I also own 2 18" 870's as well... one with remchokes, and one fixed IC. I find cylinder limits usefullness (for my uses anyway) and doesn't throw slugs as accurately as IC or MOD.

Nice brace of scatter guns you have there!!

Haha thanks! I think I need to thin it out... I also have a Benelli M4S90, Browning Cynergy, Remington 1100... and a KSG on the way. Probably have owned another 20+ 870 variants at some point in the past 10 years. Fabarms, Mossbergs, and a bunch of others, but I have a soft spot for the 870's.

The 14" is an 870P and my personal fave. The other two are just builds I threw togther... 18" IC choke with tritium rifle sights (top) and 18" Remchoke with XS tritium sights (middle). :)

Well you have never been known to do anything in a small fashion11 LOL!!

Now to the OP

As far as I am concerned, the 870P or Wingmaster of earlier production pump guns are the way to go.

Now to me, as a defensive tool, shotguns are a short range tool, and really do shine in a CQB environment.

I truly believe that the 14" shines here, as it gives you the option of adding a +1 with out impeeding your ability to "peek" arround corners or switch shoulder like a 18.5-20" barreld gun.

Further, I have stood beside 12.5" gun at an indoor range, and the noise is simply stupid loud and obnoxious, where the 14" is surprisingly much less so. Don't belive me. Try it some time. Its also an important consideration when working and moving in teams of two to four to clear rooms or secure areas. You don't want the report of your guns report to be overly consussive so that it distract or incapacitate your teammates even momentarily.

However, Canucklehead knows what he is talking about.

To allow for accurate placement of shot strings, an improved cyl choke is really important.

To this end, I personally I prefer to have my scattergun barrels have the VangComp treatment. Its not cheap, but I find it really imporves the preformance of the gun.

These are simply my thoughts.
