140 gr TTSX in 7mm for all round use?

I was able to attain over 3000 fps with the 140 grain TTSX and IMR7828SSC.
While not listed in the Nosler Book, 59 grains will deliver the 150 grain bullet at 2990.
For the 280AI, the most accurate powder/load was 60 grains of IMR4831 for 3222 fps at 98% load density.
There are 5 powders that will give higher velocities but with over 105% load density and showing a maximum of 3265 fps.

My Coopers both preferred the 140gr ttsx ahead of R-22. The muzzle velocity in my 24" barrels was 3140fps. As for the same rifle in 7mmRemmag, the premium for the model 56 compared to the model 52, is closer to $800 to $1000, depending on the rifle.

stubblejumper. how have you found RL-22 to fare with temperature variations?

It does vary somewhat, but I didn't shoot the 280 AI far enough for it to be a big factor. I also sight in at temperatures that are as close to actual hunting conditions, as practical.

The $500.00 is a good enough reason to choose the 280AI.

As for some of the velocities claimed by 280AI users, be careful!!

Some of the claims I have heard could only mean one thing....very high pressures, above the safety margins needed.
Boomer has said 3000 with the 160 in the AI.....that sounds like a max load, but not into the nether world pressure wise.

Most 7mm Rem Mags will do 3150 with the same bullet at safe pressures. Game will not know the difference, to be sure.

Regards, Dave.

I probably should have said approaches 3000 fps. In handloading, making absolute statements is unwise.

I'll second this. For some reason the .280 AI seems to be a cartridge people makes some far out claims with, more so than other cartridges often talked about.

Out of a standard .280 with a 22" barrel I get 2850 fps with a 160 and H4831, this is max load in the Sierra book and above max in all the other books. It is safe in my rifle. 3000 should be doable with a AI and a longer barrel, I've seen claims of 3200 fps with the AI though, on this website, which is ridiculous.

My vote is for the 160. Better BC and 3000 fps is plenty fast.

Hmm. The numbers I saw in the nosler book and on Hogdons data seem to suggest a max load produces somewhere around 2800 with 160 grain pill. I might be remembering incorrectly though. Mine is a 24" barrel I believe.

I've always been under the assumption that a Barnes 140 gr can do what other premium bullets can do at 160 gr. Curious to hear if others believe that generally is the case. It's a long bullet with the 140 gr being about the size of a 160 gr Accubond I think.

As it turns out, my usual stop for reloading stuff, Lebaron - which is right next to work, does not seem to stock 140gr TTSX in 7mm. They have 150 only so that is what I will first try with H4831SC if I can get my hands on it. I'd be thrilled to find an accurate load that pushes 3000fps. I hear IMR4831 provides a bit more velocity but isn't as temperature stable.

Rifle should be here Monday. Going to stock up on reloading supplies and get some factory .280 Rem ammo to sight in, break in the barrel and fire-form.
