Hello,

I got some 140gr nosler competition bullets for my 6.5x55.
I tried a few different loads but I have been having bad results. I tend to get a far amount of black soot? on the casing. I have tried out the same
loads with different bullet (same weight, same weight) and they are fine. So I was wondering if anyone had a load they might use or heard to get me pointed in the right direction. I am using 43 grains of RL22 thanks.

Your symptoms are consistent with a very light load that is so light that the case is not forming a proper seal.

Your charge is also very light. Most people are using between 47 and 48 grains of Reloder 22 with a 140-grain bullet in the Swede.

You might try working your load up a bit higher in increments of half a grain.
 
really? I have less then that for the max. I use 44 or 45 grains with accubonds and partitions and they shoot just fine. I tried the customs at 44 and 45, and each had blowback.
 
The accuracy hunting load from Sierra is 43.7 grains of Re22, and they only go a couple grains higher for max.

I did some incremental testing with my .260 Rem yesterday with 120 Bergers using 8 loads from 38.0 to 41.5 grains of IMR4064. I am still analysing the results but some of the loads look very promising. Loads 2 & 4 38.5 and 39.5 were touching or within 1/2 inch at 200 m. and 300 yards on the four separate targets.
 
What gun do you have? The one thing to keep in mind is that loading data for the Swede is quite light to protect the old military actions that can't take modern gun pressures. If you have a modern action then there is no reason to be restricted to the limits of these old guns. The 260 Remington has 53 grains of capacity compared to 57 for the Swede, so you should be able to use up to about 7% more powder in a Swede compared to a modern 260 Rem load.

The other issue is twist. Competition bullets often have very low drag, and a result are long. Long bullets need more twist to keep them stable. For example Berger 140 grain VLD's require an 8 twist.

Accuracy isn't the issue. I guess i should be more specific.
If my partitions loaded at 45 grains of RL22 are 3-4 inchs high at 100yrds. The customs with 45 were dead on at 100yrds. I loaded some rounds at 40 grains of RL22 to test out. I'll see how they go. If I get the same problem, maybe i'll try going higher again.

With that gun, you probably do want to respect the loading data. I see Alliant say 45 grains max, and the fine print says for commercial actions. Not sure it would apply to your military gun.

Slow powders do not like to be backed off in load, and I would suggest RL22 is quite slow especially for a Swede. You may want to try something faster like H4350. Here is a picture of what my .264WM cases looked like after I shot some loads of H4831 that were too light. They not only did not open up the neck, but they collapsed from blow by pressure -- potentially had a secondary explosion.

Your charges are a little light.....when I had an old swede I was loading it to about 46.5-46.7 gr. of RL-22 with 140 gr. bullets (Gamekings or Partitions...no difference in Accuracy) seated out to about 3.100" . Good enough for Subminute groups . That load is consistent with maximum data from Sierra and Nosler.
 
i have excellent accuracy with my 6.5x55 m96 with 140 grains pushed by 47 grains of imr 7828 which is pretty much the same burning rate as the rl 22 and no pressure signs.
