On the way home from town this afternoon, we spotted a couple muley does at the back end of our alfalfa field. I thought I'd check it out before heading out to my usual hunting area so I tied up the dog, stuck my rifle on the quad rack and went for a look-see. About 200 yards behind the house I crested the hill and spotted a buck and a doe across the field close to the treeline. The buck bedded down beside the tree line and the binoculars revealed a couple more deer in the trees behind him. I decided to try something bold, so I fired up the quad and headed across the snowy field right towards the deer. As I closed in to about 250 yards the buck noticed me, then stood up and walked away into the trees. I kept plowing through the snow drifts until I was about 100 yards from the tree line below the deer then turned parellel. I spotted two does watching me plow past them and then the buck came into view, intently staring my way. I bailed off the quad with my rifle and dropped into a sitting position and stuffed in a round. The crosshairs settled onto his chest and the .270WSM cracked, sending a handloaded 140gr Accubond on it's way. At the impact, the muley stumbled a couple steps, then turned & walked into the trees. The does trotted back into the trees then emerged on the far side and headed somewhere quieter. The buck wasn't with them so I waited for a few minutes then headed the 125 yards to where I last saw him and found him piled up dead beside the trees. I went back to the house and my wife and I soon had the buck hanging off the tractor. While skinning the buck, I recovered the nicely expanded bullet under the hide in front of the opposite hind quarter. Now I have a week left so it's time to locate a whitetail...
