So I placed an order the other day with Cabelas, just a few reloading items including 2lb of 3031 powder. I got an email the next day stating that the shipping would be $142 because of the powder (dangerous goods I guess). Well the total $ of the order was only $200 before shipping so $142 seems way too much . Is this normal, do you guys regularly pay that kind of money to have your powders shipped?

I have never ordered powder online, but at the price I never would! That is insane.. that must be wrong. That cost would blow the cost through the roof for reloading and make your bullets 2x the cost of match factory ammo.

Theres no way I'd pay that shipping on a can of powder, I'm sure you could find it locally at a price that won't involve shipping.

I think it's really only cost effective to order mountains of powder at a time. Just random numbers here, but $142 for 2 pounds, or $200 for 20 pounds, for example. No real idea how it scales.

Yes, it's normal. No, no one pays that. Depending on the shipper and the seller, you may be facing a dangerous good surcharge of $60+ in that shipping bill.

Higginson's shipped me a bit over 25 lbs of powder for ~$45 last year, so the numbers aren't at all terrible on bulk orders.

I tried to buy some ammo from Cabelas and two small 20 round boxes were like $80.00 to ship. I canceled the order! They have some work to do if they want to earn my online business!

Yea that's just crazy pricing.. it brings the cost of powder from 10-20 cents a round for powder to 2-3x that. Doesn't make sense for cost purposes. Your better off going to your local store and getting some, and if they don't have it asking them to order it in or wait until it comes in.

+1 for higginson. Just ordered seven pounds, with shipping it was same as buying local...which I normally would do but at the moment doesn't exist.

Very Normal. The key is they have always contacted me prior to sending to make sure I agree with the shipping. That is why I try to always buy in bulk from one of the two big powder distributors in Ontario
You could have cancelled the order after the e-mail. About 2 years ago I needed some hard to find rifle ammo in a hurry and paid 86.00 shipping for 40 rounds through DHL

OTHER DANGEROUS/HAZARDOUS GOODS:
Like Ammunition, Powder and Primers these items will require special handling and/or carrier. Additional shipping charges will be applicable to these orders. A Customer Service Representative will contact you with details on these additional charges once they have reviewed your order.

21lb, thats some serious reloading.

I was just on a "quiet" group buy where the pallet was filled. 300lbs. 12 were mine.

When Budget has powder I've bought from him and shipping was 9$ for 8lbs and some primers.. Southwest B.C to Calgary.

I ordered 5 boxes of .257 Wby ammo from Cabela's this spring. Additional shipping was only about $13.00. The $13 was added to the regular shipping charges for the rest of the order, so total (for shipping) was just oiver $27.00.
Still a good deal as the local "gun shop" here wanted almost $60.00 a box for the ammo (and they'd have to order it in anyway)
