147 grn 9mm recipe +P

I've read much about staying away from the 147grain (heavy) 9mm. Turns your pistol in to a semi auto .38 special.

I shoot 147's in IPSC, at just under 900 fps.

What is the maximum velocity you guys load this bullet too, or is it best to stay with the light rounds for velocity.

edit..I see these are limited to 1000 fps or less..even then must be a hand full.

Most factory 147gr. ammo runs about 950-990fps through my Glock 17, this includes stuff like Win SXT 147gr. (not the Ranger T series), Rem 147gr. Golden Saber, Speer 147gr. GD etc. This bullet weight was originally designed as a subsonic round and most factory stuff is under 1000fps, looking through all my chrony data the highest 147gr. velocity I could find was 994fps.

For reloading, everything will be the same, keep it under 1000fps, this is where it works best. If you are looking for velocity, use a 115gr. bullet, I have chrony data of Speer 115gr. +P+ GD at 1410fps if you are looking for a racehorse! Use 115gr. bullets and HS-6 powder and there are lots of loads that reach approximately 1300fps I believe (check the manuals first).

For the 147gr.'s keep them at about 950fps for best accuracy and reliablity. If you are looking for speed, try lighter bullets. I don't believe there are any +P loads for the 147gr. bullets. I personally like the 124gr. bullets the best, they provide the optimium balance of velocity/accuracy IMO.

Super load , went threw over 2000 so far all good in my G34 vel. 1150 169 PF
o.L 1.125 START LOW AND WORK UP.

presure the same as 115 +P
 
Do a search for "9mm major" and you should find lots of load info.

Just be careful if you try and shoot a 9mm major load out of a gun that doesn't fully support the case, (like a Glock) The high pressures could cause problems.

9mm +P and 9mm Major are 2 DIFFERENT LOADS, and are NOT interchangeable.

9mm +P have a SAAMI spec, whereas 9mm Major doesn't.

Yes, you are absoultely correct. 9mm Major is not a SAAMI spec but are loads that meet the Major IPSC power factor. Some load combinations meet the Major IPSC criteria with published loads but many loads are not from published data. USE WITH CAUTION, many are high pressure loads.

  • 9mm Luger 35,000 psi
  • 9mm Luger +P 38,500 psi
