14inch Mossberg 590A1 Help!!

I just got mine my 14inch Mossberg 590A1 and I am very happy with it but I have some concerns. I have pictures to better explain my concerns

1) The welding around the front sight has a hole in it. Should I try to find a welder to fill in the hole? See Pic #2

2) On the ring attached to the barrel, where the magazine tube goes. There is a hole that does all the way through to the other side. What is the purpose of this hole, should I be concerned? See Pic 3 and 4

3) My receiver is marked M590A1, but my barrel has no marking stating it is a heavy wall 590a1 barrel. Did I get the old bait and switch for a regular wall barrel? See Pic 5 and 6

In my opinion, ignore the small flaw in the front sight attachment. The hole is the detent for the mag cap so it doesn't accidently come off. The A1 designation means it has the heavy barrel, as opposed to the regular 590.
 
Looks like the ball and spring are missing from your magazine cap detent. I don't know why the hole goes all the way through either...... can you see through it?
I wouldn't worry about the brazing..... is that front sight blade the one that came with the gun?
Looks like a trijicon? Either way the round white dot ( if it is.....picture doesn't show it all) is nicer then the typical orange bar that Mossberg uses with their ghost ring.

Can you post a better picture of the front sight? Looks like the blade is not centered in the dove tail and someone installed it rather forcefully...?

The barrel detent ball came out. Seems pretty common for it to fall out for some reason. Contact Mossberg for a new one, get it peened over and it should stay put.
 
1. I would fill that gap with something, but welding is overkill. Just fill it to stop moisture and crud taking up residence.
2. Mine has that, never noticed it before. It doesn't bother me, so I am going to leave mine.
3. My barrel isn't stamped to say it's heavy wall, but compared to other shotguns I have, including a Mossberg 535 with shot and rifled barrels, it's obviously heavy wall.

I sold a much, much nicer (Fabarm Martial) shotgun with a 14" barrel to get my 590A1 with an 18.5" barrel. I'm pleased with the Mossberg overall but I did it for the barrel length. I hope you find the short barrel is enough for you.
 
Show us an end shot of the muzzle so the thickness can be determined. Most HB's are very obvious compared to a standard barrel.
BTW I had this exact gun in my hands when I was shot during an armed robbery. I was trying to load it and was not fast enough. First rule of a gun fight...bring a gun...second rule...bring a loaded gun. Phil.
 
Your barrel's wall will appear even heavier than usual as well since it has a modified choke taper at the muzzle.
 
Looks like the correct parkerized heavy walled barrel with sloppier than usual welds. If you have an 18.5" 500, the barrel of the 14" will probably still feel heavier. Looks like Mossberg sent you a little 'work in progress'.

I bought a Fabarm and that thing is a masterpiece compared to my 590A1. The Mossy is a utilitarian tool and they're not made to be pretty.

Should post this in the Black & Green Shotgun section as there are guys who can diagnose anything on a 590A1 (I see a bunch of them made it here though ;) )

Yeah its brazing. I wouldnt touch a welder to that, you wouldnt be happy with the results. If it bothers you that much i guess you could fill it with dark grey JB weld and blend it out with 0000 steel wool

Yah this is the factory front sight. It is a Tru Glow Tritium front sight. The front sight is the part of the gun, that is horrible.

Should not be that way for a brand new gun, but O Well.

Well nice that it's a dot instead of the stripe in my opinion, but that dovetail must be mis-cut or the front sight blade is way out of spec!

I wonder if somebody swapped out the front sight blade? Hard to believe that installation was done in the factory.

I'd drive the sight out and see if I could tune up the dovetail with a dovetail file and a hammer..... but I have a file hammer and a nice set of punches.... :) It looks like the sight blade itself might need a bit of filling as it seems to be dragging along the top of the sight base.
Should be easy for someone like Tacord or any other good smith to tune up.

Definitely a heavy barrel.
 
The barrel pic does looks like the heavy barrel. Damn, that front sight looks mangled. I wonder if someone tried to swap it out, butchered it and returned it.
 
The front sight isn't welded on. It's attached with a 2 part epoxy fuser. It's the same fuser autobody people use in place of welding. It completely seals the bare metal, and is more than strong enough for a gun sight. I've used it to attach new floor panels in a car restoration. It has an advantage over welding, in that it seals between layers.
