150 grain in 7.62x39

I loaded them only for black bear over bait or if a moose presented itself mainly for penetration factor.Picked up a partial box of old Norma .311 /130gr I have yet to try on game. As well loaded up some Barnes .310 123gr TSX for a cow moose encounter ,but when she presented herself ,I was holding my .300 H+H .So I put her to sleep with that..........Harold
 
The old 150gr Sabre Tips might expand a little but not a lot at 7.62x39 velocities. probably MV of 1800 fps or less.

Dad used Sabre Tip 150 gr bullets in his 308 years ago. He and his hunting buddies considered them to be the equivalent of the WW silvertip bullet of the day. Which is to say the bullets held up well at 308 and 30-06 velocities.

The "Sabre Tip" was offered by CIL years before Nosler developed the much more famous "Ballistic Tip".
 
Any experience using some lighter bullets? Say 110gr or 123gr bullets? I am also interested in some really heavy choices, maybe a subsonic 208gr round...lol

In an SKS I've loaded .308 110gr at 2600 fps and .311 174gr at 1800 fps with reasonable accuracy (<2" groups at 100 yds). SKS barrels have a fast 1:7.5 twist.
 
If you like experimenting, try some 150 gr 30-30 bullets. The flat point makes them shorter, so less bullet is in the case. They are designed to expand at SKS velocities.

CIL used to make 303 bullets as a 150 gr Round Nose. I have used those. Correct diameter and accurate.
 
My 7.62x39 Ruger No.1 (.311 groove diameter, 1:9 twist) has a long throat so heavy bullets can be seated without taking up case capacity. Higher bullet speeds are possible in this rifle at safe pressure levels - 150gr at 2400 fps and 170gr at 2200 fps.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm going to be loading for my Zastava M85 which I hear has a 1 in 9.5" twist (not 100% sure)

I'll definitely experiment with a few different bullets and see what works. I'll post the results either here or in a new thread (won't be for a few weeks at least)

I'm also interested in the lighter/more typical x39 bullet weights. I figure if people use 125/130 grain pills to make lighter recoiling loads for 308/3006 for ladies and kids to hunt with, then i see no reason why a 125ish grain pill from the sks wouldn't take care of bambi. Given the choice, i tend to lean towards lighter and faster bullets on deer because you dont need the kind of penetration that larger animals would require. So what are peoples experiences with 125ish grain soft points?

I actually ended up getting .5" groups with 110gr .308 Sierra Varminter over 23gr of H4198 (though I have only started looking for my OCW) but 10"+ groups when using H335 lol
