150 grain silver tip 7.62x 54r

The Russian and Bulgarian ammo seems to be sold as the same. WSS and Reliable are two places I purchased from that had the Bulgarian as Russian.

Doesn't matter really, the Bulgarian stuff was made to duplicate the Russian load and it does a good job of it.

Below are some measurements of D166, Sierra 174 HPBT and Bulgarian 1971. One of the five samples of Bulgarian is an odd ball - dimensionally larger and out of round compared to the rest. If have measure this stuff before and not observe this issue. Anybody shooting a lot of Milsurp knows there are the occasional rounds which take off in random directions for no reason - perhaps this is why. Otherwise, Bulgarian ammunition is very good. I have had a few FTF but always fire on the second strike and very few split cases. It is capable of 3-4 inches @ 100 consistently.

The chart is a little hard to read; looks fine until you hit save - sorry

A while back I bought a case of 150 grain silver tip ammo. I believe it is Bulgarian if I remember correctly. Anyone use this stuff? What can I expect out of it. I have only ever shot 180 before so I am not sure what it is going to be like. I have a 91/30 and a svt40. I will be running it in both.

FUN stuff. Very loud and makes a big flash out of my m44. Il looks and feels milder out of a 91/30 (though it probably hits harder on the muzzle end). I feel the round is more adapted to 91/30 barrel lenght.

I have a friend that claims that they are light AP rounds, while this may or may not be true we found that compared to regular heavy ball steel core they have much greater penatration on hardened steel. our romainian ball would just dent and splash at 100 yards where the silver tip drilled straight through . I have no idea what type of steel plate but it was thicker than half inch and was a old qiuck change tractor bucket mount .
I think the steel core is for cost more than for piercing purposes. Still, the stuff makes 1/2'' deep craters in mild steel 1'' thick plates, that steel core must have something to do with this. That tractor bucket mount is probably mild steel though, can't see why a hardened part would be used there.
