150gr flat nose... Good for short range 308?

Hey guys

Just came into a large quantity of .308 150gr flat nose projectiles and what I wonder is if they are any good for short range .308 loads... Understanding that their ballistic coefficient is drastically lower than a normal 308 bullet I know I won't be ringing a 500yd gong with them... But can I use them for a 100-300 (if I really wanted t stretch it) load for say an m305 ... I've used round nose before so I wouldn't foresee much of a problem other than the quick drop off but I figured I'd ask the experts
 
You can use them for all sorts of stuff from subsonic loads to full power loads. Out to 300 yards you probably will only see a few inches of drop difference from the pointy bullets.
 
Keep the velocity down to under 2500 fps and they will work OK. Run them too fast and you will have issues with bullet integrity if you use them on a big-game animal.
 
That's what I figured, I was given some advice to try and get closer to a 30-30 trajectory if I'm planning to try and stretch it out to 300 and beyond as the ballistic info is available for the 30-30

Now care to guess what I got 2000 of these boolits for
 
"Bullets" or "Boolits"?
A jacketed bullet is a bit of a different critter than a cast one.
Are your bullets jacketed or are they cast?
If they're cast, how hard are they? Pure lead is a great way to gum up the works on a semiauto.
Hard cast will lean a bit towards the jacketed side of things, depending how hard they are.

As to what you got them for, it sounds like you got a real screaming deal on them. I'll guess $20 for the works
 
I paid 50 bucks for them all, they are jacketed... iPad autocorrects bullets to boolits ... I'm really glad my gut was right on these because I'm really worried about my cheap 308 supply... Should be good for a year ... 6 months.... 3 months in my 308 now . Is usually keep it to 100 yards... Now just to get my greasy paws on some good match 308
 
Ipad auto "corrects" to something incorrect now? They are all "Bullets" - American website deliberate misspellings to "Boolits" is crap marketing hype in my opinion, as is calling bullets "projectiles" as if we don't know the difference between cartridges and bullets on this site. Jeesh!

Boolit is the slang term given to cast bullets....almost a household name amongst bullet casters and lead boolit shooters.........Jeesh!!
 
What a great buy - congrats!

If you're shooting them in an M305, make sure they feed reliably for you before you load up a zillion.

Being a low cost hunting bullet, you never really know what to expect for accuracy. They might shoot 1.5 MOA for you, then again they might shoot 4MOA for you. Even if they end up being lowly plinking ammo you can still have quite a bit of (very affordable!) fun with them.

Load 'em up as hot as you would any other 150 grain bullet.

They'll have more drop than a spitzer hunting bullet or a match bullet, but that's no reason not to shoot them and have a lot of fun with them. If you shoot them at ~2700fps they'll be supersonic out to 500y or so. I would not hesitate to try them at 300y, 500y or 600y, just to see how they shoot at those distances.
 
I had a 1943 Remington 03A3 30-06 with a worn bore and a over sized chamber, I shot Hornady 150 and 170 grain bullets made for the 30-30 in this rifle at around 2500 fps. The softer lead core of these bullets help to make them conform to bore diameter better and improved accuracy. By using these bullets and down loading the 30-06 the brass lasted much longer when reloaded.

If you can find out what type bullets they are and look in the reloading manual it will tell you the designed optimum velocities the bullets were made for. Meaning the minimum and maximum fps for reliable expansion.

I used these loads for deer hunting in the woods here in central Pennsylvania for years in my 03 Springfield.
 
They seem to feed easier than the pointed bullets , just did a quick function test today.. Tomorrow I might sit down and see what I can do with them... I don't think I'll shove them in my target 308 but for the m305 .. The cheaper the better
 
You might be surprised at what a 150 grain bullet can do at long range. The Palma Match bullets are all 155 grain bullets IIRC. It's the match rules. A .308 shooting the same bullet accross the board. Everything else is up to your pocketbook. Powder. Gun (Single shot action of course). Barrel. Scope. etc.

And those boys shoot at 100 yards.

Really?? 100yds? Hell, I can do that. Time to hit the precision shooting matches!
 
So I lied and took a couple shots with my target rifle, has one group at moa and a couple just barely over that... All in all I think these will do fine... Man I love it when stuff works out
 
Did these happen to be the Game ranger bullets from South Africa that Marstar was selling? I know you said jacketed so not sure. Curious as I have about 400 yet to try and they are flat nose as well. I too was wondering about the jump and accuracy.

I hate these made up bull$hit words. (Ok, yes, projectile is not a made up word, but why bother with the extra syllable...bullet works fine and is more specific).
