I went out and bought 100 cartridges of Hornady A-MAX 155gr match ammo (#8095PM) and I just noticed that it says it's not recommended for semi auto use. I've got a Norinco M305. I looked into it and seems like answers are all over the place. People mention improper powder burning for a semi auto? I'm just wondering if it's safe to fire or should I just save it for a bolt gun one day?

It is safe to fire, no doubt, but it may not cycle, cycle unreliably, give poor accuracy, not eject properly, or other issues. My M305 prefers pretty stout loads normally so unless it is sold dangerously over pressure (which no manufacturer would do intentionally for liability reasons) I can't see a problem.

You are probably wasting the potential of that premium ammo running it through a semi no matter what though.

Hmmm interesting. I suppose I'll think about returning it tomorrow if possible. No point dropping $31 per 20 if it's going to plink like the cheap stuff, or worse even.

Hey Dling,

I'd shoot it if I were you. I've recently put a couple of hundred rounds of 168Gr. Hornady Match through my rifle and have seen my groups shrink in half. The bad part is that it spoils you for decent ammo. I'm no longer having quite as much fun shooting surplus and am shopping around for reloading gear. Haven't had a FTF yet with Hornady although had a few with MFS.

I don't know man, once one alludes to Palma, most long range shooters only attend these matches with full blown, bolt action target rifles. This ammo is generally loaded pretty darn stout, in order to remain supersonic at extended ranges. (1000 yards or so)

Edit: Does your M305 have the gas cutoff, ala M14 copy?
Turn that thing until the gas is shut off, then you can work your M305 just like a straight pull bolt action without wrecking the guts of your rifle??

maybe

Would the pressure be the same though?

That's mostly what I'm scared of...not really worried about my receiver blowing up or something but I'm assuming it can get pretty stressful on my op rod if it's a really stout load. I'll probably load a couple rounds and see what happens. and yes, there is a gas cutoff. Interesting idea. Worse comes to worse I save it for another rifle. I'll probably get a .308 bolt gun eventually anyway. I'm really green with this so mistakes will happen I suppose!
