Apparently the US Coast Guard have 16.5" Remington 870's in their inventory.

Ever see 16.5" Remington barrels in Canada ? I like the idea of that length. Might be kinda useful.

Iirc... A few years back (during the LGR) some 16" 870s turned up. I think they were police surplus or something.. Again Iirc, may have been from Quebec. Anyways, after they'd been sold to civis the rcmp worked out the guns had been cut down by the police. Lol. Pretty sure everybody had to turn in their barrels. Somebody else might recall or maybe even turned in their barrel..

I thought they just had 14", could these 16.5"s just be 14"s with a permanent muzzle attachment of some kind?

No, they looked like about 16.5". This was a Coast Guard guy saying that's what they had on their ship. It was on the Mossberg Owners forum.

Can I post a link from another forum or is that a CGN police freak out ?

Not sure, why don't you just post the pic?

All the newer USCG 870s I've seen have been in this configuration.

Don't know how to post a pic. This one looked a bit longer.

The pictures you posted are clearly 14" though.

Maybe it's the angle of the pic but looks a touch longer than 14". I could be wrong.

This was the guys post:

"Gotta give my service a place here as well... Coast Guard uses 16.5" barreled 870's... Kicks a bit, but I always have a blast (no pun intended) when I get time with this at the range (That's not me btw, just a google pic I found)"

Looks like a 14" barrel.

I bought one of the Surplus 16" 870's when they were around, got a letter one day saying that I had to send the gun in for destruction as it was a prohibited item. I responded that they were welcome to buy my barrel from me but that I didn't like the idea of having it destroyed without compensation.
They told me they would not pay me for my gun or barrel and that I would have to defend myself in court and set up a court date...... then they tried again to have me take it in for destruction and I declined saying I'd take my chance in court. They told me they would be flying someone in from out east for the court date and I suggested it might be cheaper just to buy my barrel...... :) Obviously they were having none of that. Finally about a few weeks before the court date someone got in touch with me and told me that in fact they had been wrong the whole time and that a barrel can not be a prohibited device on it's own. It had to be connected to a receiver in order to be prohibited. I said fine I will remove it from my receiver and never assemble it ever again....... they were uncomfortable with the idea that I could simply decide to one day but the 16" barrel on my 870 to which I responded that I could just as easily cut a longer barrel down to 16" if I wanted to break the law.
They finally after many requests and mild threats conceded that I could indeed keep the barrel..... I offered to sell it again but they were not interested.

So the next week I went in to the local RCMP station with a 12.5" barrel to have it verified and registered. Once the gun registration had been updated to show a 12.5" barrel instead of the "prohibited" 16" I was good to go and the Country was safer then it had been only moments before...... :)

The lady that was the firearms verifier at our local detchament had to be shown by another member how to release the action on an 870 and then proceeded to take the measurement of the 12.5" barreled 870 with the action open....... finding no corresponding barrel length in the FRT system she went about creating a new one. I didn't see any of this going on or I would have pointed out the error but after about 45 minutes of waiting for her to measure my barrel I was late for another appointment an asked what was taking so long? She said she had to create a new FRT number which I thought was odd as the 12.5" barrels are pretty common..... it wasn't till I got home and translated the mm measurement to inches that I realized what she had done.
Drove back and explained it to her, took her 5 minutes to correct the paperwork and I was gone without so much as a thank you or apology.

It's not till you deal with the CFC in a situation where they lie and intimidate, then fold and capitulate to the law, or that you deal with the local RCMP firearms expert who can't release the action on an 870, that you realize the possible levels of deceit and ineptitude in this country.

I learned a lot dealing with that 16" barrel and it remains as a monument for all that is wrong with our gun control scheme.

It doesn't look 2.5" longer though.

Sometimes images can get distorted depending on aspect ratio, level of compression and whatnot.

Dinks, eh?
That's interesting thanks for posting it!

That's brutal and emblematic of so many things that are wrong with both law enforcement culture and firearms laws in our country.

You're probably correct on the length 870P. The poster probably made an error while typing.

Interesting story there 870P.

About 8 years ago I bailed out a brother in law on a firearms charge. Long and short of it ... he was stupid but really hadn't broken any firearms law.

The flat out BS, crap and illegal activity by the courts & police were stunning. The POS prosecutor was pulling some illegal crap to block me as his surety because I'm a firearms owner. I knew the relevant firearms laws and criminal code and basically slapped him around through the duty counsel lawyer. This was all before it went to court. One day while in the process of bailing him out I was waiting the the court hallway with my wife. This complete POS prosecutor calls out my name (we had yet to meet face to face), walks up to me after I identify myself, tells me he's the prosecutor, leans into me so no one else will hear and says EXACT QUOTE "If it were up to me none of you people would ever own guns". Since he was the only one in ear shot I told him he's lucky we we're not alone in a dark ally because I beat him senseless. POS pussy just walked away.

Very true story.

These are they type of people running the show.

He either made a mistake or simply doesn't know, as is often the case with people in uniform.

That's not a knock, when its "work stuff", I swear that part of your brain turns off, happens to me too, I worked on trains and couldn't tell you much about them as far as model numbers or specifications, anything that that isn't directly related to my job.

I got totally embarrassed one day talking to a rail enthusiast, he's asking me questions about the equipment and I'm all like umm, ahh, duhhh like I was Justin Castreau!

Anyway, its a fact that unless you're special people of some kind, you can expect to get screwed over by the system in this country.

Well, the difference between your work example 870P and a cop "just doing his job" is it cost my BIL a year without his guns and 10 grand. After a year of court BS the charges were dropped and he got his guns back because he hadn't broken any laws.

Kinda hard to stomach imo. We should't cut them any slack.

Just so I'm clear 870P ...

So this 16" was "prohib" (or so they tried to say) because it was cut to that length ...... by the police ?

Or was the barrel manufactured to that length ?

I was talking about the Coastie possibly not knowing his barrel length.

Yup, there are tons of people here who should never have been given power and probably wouldn't amount to anything in any other culture, exhibit A: Justin Trudeau.

That's Can-down you're looking for.

He said the police had cut it though.
