16.5" Remington 870 barrel

I was talking about the Coastie possibly not knowing his barrel length.

Yup, there are tons of people here who should never have been given power and probably wouldn't amount to anything in any other culture, exhibit A: Justin Trudeau.

Oh, gotcha.

That's Can-down you're looking for.

He said the police had cut it though.

Not sure which organization cut the barrel but they did it legally for their own use, selling it was a mistake but the biggest mistake of alll is our silly barrel length laws.

No matter how hard you swing the hammer you just can't beat sense into some people, case in point Ontario's Liberal government destroying the province...

Indeed, it's very absurd. Downright angering. Also disgusting cops enforce such non-sense.

Can't post what I really want to say on the matter.

12 1/2 to the barrel ring makes that a 14 inch barrel, just enough room to add a +1 extension and be even. 14 inches is the sweet spot for CQB shotguns, and, not surprisingly, it's a factory length. There is no point what so ever in splitting the difference between 14 and 18 - in fact, I've seen tests that show a 14 barrel is at least the equivalent of 18 in every way, except US legality.

does this not look like a 12" REMINGTON barrel ?

i believe Remington makes a eleven inch barrel as i have seen dealers in the states advertising them . they also make some odd size barrels for their quick take-down shotgun they make for the police.

Yeah I'm aware of the odd sized LE quick take-down stuff but wasn't aware go the 11". No real advantage to searching out an 11" over a 12".

Think I'd just rather own a 12" Remington barrel over the Grizzly and the extra weight of the Dlask might not be necessary.

Looks like a 14" barrel.

I bought one of the Surplus 16" 870's when they were around, got a letter one day saying that I had to send the gun in for destruction as it was a prohibited item. I responded that they were welcome to buy my barrel from me but that I didn't like the idea of having it destroyed without compensation.
They told me they would not pay me for my gun or barrel and that I would have to defend myself in court and set up a court date...... then they tried again to have me take it in for destruction and I declined saying I'd take my chance in court. They told me they would be flying someone in from out east for the court date and I suggested it might be cheaper just to buy my barrel...... :) Obviously they were having none of that. Finally about a few weeks before the court date someone got in touch with me and told me that in fact they had been wrong the whole time and that a barrel can not be a prohibited device on it's own. It had to be connected to a receiver in order to be prohibited. I said fine I will remove it from my receiver and never assemble it ever again....... they were uncomfortable with the idea that I could simply decide to one day but the 16" barrel on my 870 to which I responded that I could just as easily cut a longer barrel down to 16" if I wanted to break the law.
They finally after many requests and mild threats conceded that I could indeed keep the barrel..... I offered to sell it again but they were not interested.

So the next week I went in to the local RCMP station with a 12.5" barrel to have it verified and registered. Once the gun registration had been updated to show a 12.5" barrel instead of the "prohibited" 16" I was good to go and the Country was safer then it had been only moments before...... :)

The lady that was the firearms verifier at our local detchament had to be shown by another member how to release the action on an 870 and then proceeded to take the measurement of the 12.5" barreled 870 with the action open....... finding no corresponding barrel length in the FRT system she went about creating a new one. I didn't see any of this going on or I would have pointed out the error but after about 45 minutes of waiting for her to measure my barrel I was late for another appointment an asked what was taking so long? She said she had to create a new FRT number which I thought was odd as the 12.5" barrels are pretty common..... it wasn't till I got home and translated the mm measurement to inches that I realized what she had done.
Drove back and explained it to her, took her 5 minutes to correct the paperwork and I was gone without so much as a thank you or apology.

It's not till you deal with the CFC in a situation where they lie and intimidate, then fold and capitulate to the law, or that you deal with the local RCMP firearms expert who can't release the action on an 870, that you realize the possible levels of deceit and ineptitude in this country.

I learned a lot dealing with that 16" barrel and it remains as a monument for all that is wrong with our gun control scheme.

Was that Surrey? - Sounds like the woman they had doing the firearms support work in the late '90's. I had a bitser L1A1 with 3 serial numbers, she didn't know which one was the right one, so I had her write all 3 down. Reggie showed up with 3 serial numbers strung together - must have been 30 digits.

Looks like it, but there's some weird going on with the ends - different colour finish. Remember that in the US, as long as you file the paperwork, you can chop as much as you want.

Yeah, something is up with the finish. They almost look like Mossberg barrels.

I don't know if it makes a difference performance wise but a 16" barrel is the perfect length if you want to use the factory folder and be just over 26" folded. Plus I wanted one of those LE 16" as I assumed it was a custom order from Remington. IIRC they had rifle sights so looked factory. I missed the boat on those but I bought a 16" Mossberg around the same time frame for the same reason. When it showed up it was obvious the barrel had been chopped but the cert said over 470mm. When I tried to take it up with the dealer for selling me an obvious prohib his response was along the lines of " the cert says non/restricted so what's the problem?". Took the barrel off and it just sits around because Mossberg barrels just don't seem easy to come by or cheap.

12.5", but yeah. Sure does look like it.

Not sure why someone would want a 16" barrel when they could have a 12.5" or even 14". I love the 12.5" I have on my 870...very easy to pack either in my Arc'teryx daypack (I can hear the MEC types screeching now) or in the gunbearer on my frame pack.
