16 Gauge Hull Question

Hey,

So I've been thinking about buying a SxS 16 gauge, and of course, reloading would "save me money" ;) I already reload for my 12 and 20 gauge, and I've always used Winchester AA hulls. However, from my quick look on the Winchester site, they don't seem to offer a AA 16 gauge shell. I've also been told to use Remington STS OR Federal Gold Medal. Again, my quick search turned up nothing.

I know that people out there reload the 16, so I was wondering what hulls they use. Am I just missing it on the site? Or is there some other hull to use? If it helps, my loads will be on the "mild" site. By mild I mean the load Lee gives out with their Conversion Kit.

Just curious to what I should use. Thanks,

Cory

No decent compresion formed 16 gauge hulls manufactured in North America. Winchester discontinued the compression formed AA style 16 hull several decades ago. Best bet is the black Remington game loads available only in the US. Check out a web site called "16 Gauge Society" for tons of info.

I use a 16ga sxs for hunting. I only reload for 12ga. If I go through a box or two of 16 in a season that would be a lot. At under $10 a box, it wouldn't be economically feasible to reload.

Cory, next time you are in Atikokan drop by my house. I have a few bags of Cheddite primed 16 gauge hulls and some loading components and recipes that you can have. I always encourage a new 16 bore shooter. I thought I was the last one shooting a 16 bore in Atikokan until I found a 16 ga federal hull on the Wagita bay road. Yours perhaps? Drop by over Christmas.

regards, Darryl Wright
