It is available, but there are fewer dealers who stock it and if they do have it, there are fewer choices: fewer brands, load and shot size choices. It is also more expensive than 12 or 20 gauge. More or less on par with 28 Ga. and .410 as far as price and availability go. Further, non-toxic shot offerings are next to non-existent.
So it really depends on how much you will be shooting it, what you will be using it for, and whether you are willing to stock the ammo.

Picked up a couple of boxes from Triggers and Bows in Burford, they had lots of Remington, different shot size and not any more expensive than any other gauge.

CanadaAmmo (a sponsor here) shipped me a case (250 rounds) of Fiocchi 1oz 7.5 shot for $100. For $10/box, you can't go wrong. They didn't have it on their website, but I found if you ask they can get it for you.

People who say that 16ga ammo is hard to find need to open there eyes. I get mine from Canadian tire including some steal shot.
They have it here also and our canadian tire has almost no ammo selection. They have federal in 16ga and not expensive either .

My buddy has a 16 gauge and he bought a few boxes of shells from canadian tire on a sale for like 5 bucks a box. It wasn't selling so they were on sale. I bought a few hundred .22 shorts for 4$/100 a while back on the same kind of sale. Pays to look at the ammo rack every time you are there.
Just as an FYI: I bought a 16 GA. double gun two years ago. I went to 4 CT stores between Kirkland, QC and Hawkesbury, ON to buy ammo, since I remembered seeing some there in the past; none had 16 Gauge ammo. One sales clerk told me that they no longer stocked it, because of lack of demand. I kept looking but could not find any at 2 Sail (Baron) stores and two independant hunting and sporting good stores. I finally found some at Relais Chasse et Pêche in Grenville, QC. They only carried #7.5 shot, 1 oz load, Remington ammo. I bought it. It was $12.95 for 25 shells. That is about 50% more than comparable 12 Ga. or 20 Ga. ammo. And yes: since then, I have seen it on sale at other CT stores; because there is little demand for it and they are liquidating, which means they will not restock. I know that steel shot exists in 16 gauge, but I have never seen a single box of it on a store shelf.
Maybe availability is better in some other areas. But my experience is that in these parts, it is indeed hard to find. And BTW, my eyes are open.
PS: I have since sold that gun.
The joys of hunting with a 16 make finding and paying for the shells worthwhile IMHO.
I buy the loads I like WHENEVER I see them, especially if they are on sale and have a pretty good supply stored up.
Unless I am trying out a newly purchased gun, I never take them to the range. Hunting only.
