16 yard trap - 7.5 or 8 shot

It doesn't make a whole lot of difference. There's a guy around here with a shot maker that sells shot for $25/bag instead of 40, and I buy that. It appears to end up being about 75% number 8 size, and the rest number 9. With am Im. modified or full choke it does just fine for 16 yard trap. You're supposed to get on them birds as quick as possible anyway

I have no preference myself and I think there is no practical difference for 16 yard trap for most people, IMHO.

Shoot either. The small difference means nothing for all intents and purposes. If you feel there is a big difference in your breaks go see how your gun patterns the loads.

New shooters spend far too much time agonizing over this type of trivia when they should learning proper stance, hold points, gun fit and how to concentrate individually on each shot.

#8 for regular conditions and #7.5 for really windy days. But all the above posts are correct, it doesn't really make a big difference. I shoot #7.5 for singles, handicap 25.5yds and doubles.

Do you use a 2 3/4 or 3 dram load for singles/doubles/handicap?

I like 8 better, but really it probably it stems from a win in the provincial summer games when I was shooting 8s.

7.5 if really windy, or handicap.

2-3/4 dram 8's work just dandy for 16 yard ATA Trap and Trap Doubles, but start to loose a bit beyond the 20.
Yes, I know, 8's can break targets from further back, but 7-1/2's have proven themselves over the years.
The best 3 dram 7-1/2's you can get your hands on are for the back fence. My all-out favourites are
Federal Gold Medal Handicap papers (T171's) ... a bit pricey and often hard to get ... but they work !
Second choice is Remington Premier Nitro 27 Handicaps. Both also make very good Sporting Clays loads for
distant presentations, rabbits and battues !
