Howdy, me again .
i got offered a box of 162gr SST in 7mm for 50c a pop so done did it, dont want to burn them in the 7 Rem mag so i am thinkin some time with the Montana 7-08 is in order - im going to use Varget i suppose.. as havnt enough of other stuff to make it worth while..

will also be tryin to do one of those 1 shot ? ladder tests.... going to research that method up a bit more as it seems to vary a little?

and will be looking for the mild node so as to limit recoil and effectively only shooting to 300meters on Fallow deer mostly over summer into March/April.

Anyone got reports from using this projectile and cartridge for the Deer?
im assuming around 2600 is where il be hanging at?

Well I’m assuming your Kimber has a 22” barrel. The accuracy node isn’t optimal in that barrel length. I’d try around 40gn Varget if your reasonably close to the lands. You will get in the ~2525-2550fps. Theres another node at max pressure ar probably about 40.6gn that will get you just shy of 2600fps

howdy- i was indeed thinkin of below the 40gr charge! just something to shoot straight!

it is only a 22 barrel, definatly not chasen anything more than some plinking an hunting fodder, what the go with the lader test, load one at .2 intervals from say 38.4 up?

you're going to find that the trajectory on those bullets is rather abysmal.

If you sight in 3 1/4 inches high at 100yds, with 2550fps, you will be zeroed at 200yds and 12-13in low at 300yds.

From the Fallow Deer I've seen on the farms in my area, their cross sections are pretty small.

Not to bad if you have a range finder for shots beyond 225 yards, where the bullet really starts to drop off.

Varget should do the job well. I would start with 40 grains, over a magnum primer, which works well in both of my 7-08 rifles and gives me close to 2600fps from the rifle with the 24in bbl.

A friend that has a Savage, which won't shoot this load well at all, uses 42 grains of Varget. His magwell won't allow him to seat the bullets out far enough IMHO and his accuracy is just OK. Your rifle likely has lots of magwell room to seat the bullets out far enough to be closer to the leade. Maybe has a tighter chamber as well.

Yeah I’ve had 2 22” 7/08 and 2 24” 7/08 and it always seems like the accuracy node on the 22” is a little on the hot side. 24” barrel has a milder load but you really don’t gain much fps.

I’d start at at least 39gn myself and run them over a chrono

Varget is not the best powder for the 7mm-08/ 162 sst combination.

The 'node/OBT' is at 1.1270 mS for 22" bbl, there are others but they are either over design pressure or are way under, with H-4350.

Expect ~ 2564 ft/s and 60 408 psi with bullet ~0.010" off the lands with 42.78 gns of H-4350.

Message me tonight, well , my tonight , and I'll check my data for 160+ grain bullets and see what speeds they were liking, I went as high as 168 if memory serves , accuracy was good, speeds were what would of been expected.

H4350 was the most accurate powder I used, W760 gave good accuracy and good velocity.

Haven't burnt varget in a 7/08 yet.

You havnt?
varget in the 7 -08 has to be the all rounder :)

on hand i have some left over 2213sc and 2206H which i dont think are much chop for them either, the 2213 load with 162 is fairly compressed and i think 06h proberly too quick for slow 162.

Yep 2500 or so sounds good, shot some 30-06 150gr at around 2700 last night and thats pretty sweet! pitty the load wasnt lol

Yeah Kelly il shoot you a PM over this weekend

my kimber shows pressure early with varget loads, my go to 140gr (ppsn) load is 40gr of varget... a little hesistant to load 39 straight up, may be in the 38s to be safe, speed is not needed :)

thanks, i will sus it out.....

Definatly no pressure signs at 38.5 , an a promosing group for me and the kimber, just under 1.5 inch which im sure was my stuff up, i will await the post with the box of SST and maybe play with seating after another group at 38.5, recoil was sweet, i was fairly happy with the report and didnt think there was any lag between bang and thud so certainly not too slow..

interesting, thanks.
my kimber chamber is tight from my experiences!
i seated to the cannelure for starter but may play there for accuracy improvement.

id not know for speed at all, proberly wont worry to much, although 3.5 + at 100 is a bit too much, il likely have it 2 inch high at most.. which should be still a backline hold at 300m..but as you say the fallow are a small animal!
