165 gr accubond for moose

I think the moose would die, if that's what you mean. If you mean 'take' in the ###ual sense, I have no words of advice for you. :)

Is a 165gr Accubond out of a 300 win short mag doing 3100 feet per sec good to take moose in Ontario?

personally I would go to a 180gr-200gr, why waste all that powder capacity on a lighter bullet? but that load should work. just pray you don't hit meat inside 100yrds ;)

X2 for the 180 or larger. The moose is a BIG animal, penetration is the name of the game. The lighter bullets at high velocity will expand explosively and do lots of damage, but what about those quartering on shoulder shots where you want to penetrate through the bones and into the vitals. Personally I have taken moose with the 180 grain partion in 30/06 and pounded through the shoulder at 175 yards with very good results.

No moose will ever notice the difference between a 165 AB and 180 AB.

Go with whichever one shoots better in YOUR rifle. My 300 wsm does not care for the 180 AB at all yet shoots the 165s into one ragged hole at 100 yards. Your rifle may be the same or it might like the heavier bullet.

I would use the Barnes TSX first, the accubond is a medium penetrator, but the longer weights such as 180's or 200's would seriously dig down into the powder space n a 300 wsm. The 168 gr TSX is the same length, but will penetrat like at heavier bullet.

Accubond not a deep penetrator?

Accubond a medium penetrator?

Let me say that I shot a Moose at 850ft with my 7MMRM and 160gr AB and I had 2 pass trough, one while the cow was facing me, I shot her between the neck and shoulder, it went right trough the whole body and it exited on top of the hind and the second shot was broadside pass trough also, If this is medium penetration, I wonder what "deep penetration" woud be (sounds funny said like that), don't think the moose will notice.

I have 2 moose with the 160AB, and both times, I filled the freezer. :D.

Bullet placement kinda works but that's just my opinion.
I never have shot a moose and said .15 grains or 200fps more and that sucker would have been
mine for sure.
Many moose have fallen to many a lesser grain . 165 gr will suffice

My buddy shoots 165gr Accubonds in his Tikka T3 300WSM. I shoot 180gr in my 300WM and so does my hunting buddy. As mentioned, I think the 180gr bullet is the better preference for the 300WM and 300WSM. I do have a box of the 150 and 165gr Accubonds to reload, but I liked the 180gr for my 300WM I had in the early 90's and when I bought my new one in 1997 (Sako m75SS) I stayed with the 180gr for all my big game.

Not to say the 165gr AB;s wont work as I can attest to the 140gr AB's from my wife's and my Tikka T3 270WSM drop moose/elk/bears/deer with one shot kills at various distances.

Just out of curiosity - is there a reason why you want to go to a 165? The 180 is the more natural choice, not that I think it'll make a huge difference with that bullet.

The reason for this loads is. I shoot a Tikka T3 lite that for what ever reason does not like the 180 gr bullets. With the 165's I get about a 2.5" group at 300 meters. The 180's are all over the place.

How did you kill a moose with a .25-20? Put a cartridge in an apple then let the moose choke to death on it or eventually die of lead poisoning.

Good one. Actually I have killed 4 with a 25-20. Bullet placement. Knock a hole in the heart and that is all it takes. Knowing where the heart is helps too.....Killed one with a 38-40, a 6mm, 25-06, 303, 308, 308 Norma, 3006, 7mm, ...........but never an SKS.(nor would I)

That's a pretty good reason :)

IF you ran into a problem, i'd guess it would be at very close ranges (like if you shot one at 25 yards or something) where the bullet undergoes a lot more stress. But I'd bet good money it'd be fine, still penetrate more than well enough to kill the bugger. They're reportedly very tough bullets.

I killed one with a Ford Explorer. The Explorer was mortally wounded too though. Nice thing of it is that the moose didn't go to waste. A couple of skunked hunters were able to take her home after the appropriate calls to FW. Sorry for the hijack. :slap:
