Thanks for the info! no issues getting the parts in from the US? (first timer here)
will the "308 Barrel Nut Wrench" they sell work on the BCL? seems it would be worth getting it shipped along with the hand guard.

Had to pay some customs but other that no problem ordering from the states. I'll take a look at the slr wrench to see if it fits the bcl nut.

Have to be honest with you guys. I much prefer the look of the factory handguard compared to these light weight SLR ones. This coming from a guy who bought a MI for his DPMS GII. I know you're saving weight which is great, but the main purpose of those handguards is to protect the barrel/gas block and allow you to mount a bipod, vertical grip etc while still free floating the barrel. Be careful with some of the light weight alternatives. Look at what happened with the Fortis and the MH, guys were getting the handguard touching the gas block under load. Something you want to avoid at all cost!!

Of the lightweight options, I think I like the looks of the MI the best. Some of these are just getting too skeleton like.

Within Canada, where is the best place to order one of these ###y looking hand guards? And that Grip, what is it, where is it from?
Nice unit!

(that's what she said).

SLRrifleworks.com. SLR Helix for 308, 11.7", "Armalite nut -dpms high option" when you order. 250$ USD.

The grip is from my Rock River Arms AR Pistol, but I think it's a hogue grip that's rebadged.

I think it will. I have an SLR 5.56 barrel nut and their tool, which they label as "556i", which works obviously. No reason the "308i" wouldnt work with "308" stuff :)

Not my pic, but i have the one on the left.

I guess in hindsight I should have clarified - will that SLR 308i Tool work to REMOVE the "stock" nut on the BCL or did you have to MacGyver something to pull the old nut off.

Lol

Macgyver'd it ;)

But looking at it in the above picture, my BCL and SLR nut, and my 556i and 5.56 SLR barrel nut, it should work, unless BCL used a proprietary shape...

Ya ended up getting mine off, used Kroil and froze it over night then screamed by the power of grey skull and beat the #### out of it with a pipe wrench. The old barrel nut has a couple scratches and nothing more that thing is a beast.

Dang.
and excellent He-Man reference.
Wonder if that tool from SLR would have done the trick and given how much bashing was needed if you would have just busted the wrench!

The problem is the barrel nut is in 2 pieces so the squared part in the front comes off easy and will likely work with any wrench or the slr one. The problem is the second piece that's threaded onto the receiver.

I weighed mine with the 6 screws ;)

Without screws its 576.6g

The Gen 1 HG is ridiculous lol... I can't believe how thick of an extrusion they chose.

Back in the summer when they first dropped, everyone was speculating the barrels were very heavy as well ("well over 3 lbs"), but they are right in line with medium weight contours. Mine was 2 lb 12 oz or so, my replacement Criterion is 2 lb 6 oz. There isn't nearly as much weight to lose off the barrel as initially thought.

Ah, I see.
well, that's kinda dumb ain't it. to state the obvious, if it were a 1-piece design we wouldn't be having this conversation. Can't believe a Pipe Wrench is going to have to touch this rifle (or any rifle)... but it looks inevitable.

Ok,

so top is the slr nut, bottom is the BCL nut.. they're the same dimensions for a tool... the marks on the nut are from a plumber's wrench.. couldn't find my bigger adjustable wrench.

That collar was probably severely overtightened onto the extension at the factory, it should only be hand tight and then indexed correctly with the gas tube. Mine came off without any tools after I removed the nut with a crescent wrench.

Lol severely overtightened is an understatement. Wonder if the gen 2 threading is slightly off? For my slr nut could only hand tighten 1/4 of the way before having to use a wrench
