Hi guys Iam new to the hunting adiction. I have been invited to hunt 16c for moose. Unfortunately now I have a bull tag and find that the group that invited me has only hunted the area once 8 years ago. Can anyone sugest a source for maps or topos Or give any other advice for area. Sept 19-tag filled.

Call the Thunder Bay MNR office and they will tell you what roads are open and which ones are closed to motor vehicles. I have a great map of that area but 75% of the roads aren't accessible.

Maps can be ordered through NOSTA (North of Superior Tourist Assoc.) 1-800-265-3951
or "google" nosta.on.ca for info. The map you want is titled "Caribou Lake" which is Map8 in their series. The map scale is 1:130,000, which is not the best in the world, but the info is fairly current and in most cases more up to date than than the Federal Topo series. Blargon is correct about road closures in the area. Check first and be sure, the MNR/OPP will prosecute if they find you on a closed road, no exceptions! Enforcement is very, very aggressive in that part of the world!! M.C.

The NOSTA map is the one I have. I called the T-Bay MNR office and the lady there went through all roads on my map, as to which were open and which were not. Some are open, but you can't hunt near certain lakes...

Updated info for you on 16C

I just posted this on another forum for a fellow...

So here I have these awesome maps that show every little cut-off and logging road, and skidder trails, but you can't access them as the red X marks where the signs are on the main access points. The roads that do have the X's further in, have limited hunting near many lakes.

The MNR told me no hunting near Doe Lake, Fawn Lake, Caribou Lake, Big Lake, Whiddon Lake, D'Alton Lake, and I'm sure there are more by now...You will see signs where the X's are, and they will be patrolling the area. Basically not many places to get off the highway, and consider that you won't be the only hunters there either...

Thanks blargon This realy helps. Are the X,s marking roadclosure for autos only or are atv,s stoped also? Do you have any distance restrictions to the mentioned lakes?

The lake restrictions I believe were 1 mile...

Signs will be the same or similar to this one. All motorized traffic. AFAIK you can walk the roads, but you'll be carrying out the whole moose on your back. I've read of guys using a bicycle and a tag-along trailer...;)

I hunted in 16C (East of Armstrong) last year. IT WAS A WAR ZONE!

That was my thought as well, so we never applied for that area. Too little access, too many hunters.

But if someone already has a bull tag for that area, might as well go...

This is about a 22 hour drive oneway. Iam thinking of maybe hitting northbay with the three calf tags instead. Its only 4 hours. Thanks guys now I have some thinking to do.Goodluck to all this season.
