16ga. Ammo

I guess you could call around and see who has those Federal at what prices. Sometimes you can buy something uncommon like that for a cheap price because it has been sitting for a long time and it hasn't been reordered which means the price hasn't changed. That's how I got a lot of my 16 gauge loads actually.

Remington makes a 16 gauge Foster type load and you can buy them anywhere. I just took a look on Cabela's website and they are priced at $7.99 presently.

I use the 1 oz Federal Game-Shok in #6 or CIL Paperhull in #6. Are those 1-1/4 oz loads pheasant loads or just heavy game loads?

Those 1 1/4oz are wing shok from Federal, they are probably pheasant loads. The slugs can be found, the buckshot seems to be tough to find now, I think companies started to discontinue it a few years ago.

I picked up a couple boxes of SG imperial for $20 last year :)

Ah. I thought you meant the slugs. I have probably fifteen or twenty CIL paper hulls in SG. I got them with a lot of 16 gauge that I got for $25. I picked up some IVI, Remington long range, CIL plastic hulls and two boxes of Winchester Mark 5 in #7.5 in the same deal. All 16 gauge.

They sure loved hit loads back then as most are 3-1/4 dram equivalent.

They kick like a mule with a poor stock design and tight choke.

My Western Arms SxS is great, the single shot stevens kicks bad.

Oh, its pretty good with the Federal and my hand loads, but you feel it with the old stuff and the modern Remington Game Loads. I have two shotguns I need to put a pad on. The 1938 T. Eaton in 16 gauge and my 1936 Francotte in 12 gauge. That Francotte has a horn butt plate but the gun is way too short for me. I am going to get it fitted as to not have the stock altered or I might also just buy a decent slip on and use it for both. I'd rather fit a pad for looks though.

I can usually find it (lead only) at Canadian Tire. Federal blue box #6 and sometimes #4. I found a few box's of Rio #7.5's at a local shop not to long ago and bought them on a whim but I generally don't like to shoot loads as light as that. I used to be able to find lots of Rio #4's and Rottweil Brenneke slugs locally but havn't looked for them in a long time. They might still be around but I'd imagine they'd be at least 1$/round.

Fox I want to apologise. I went to both Cabelas in Barrie and Bass Pro in Vaughan today. The Federal 16 gauge steel is in fact $29.99 at both places. Not surprising since the 20 gauge Federal blue box has gone up by $9 a box as well.

Then Canadian dollar went up they did not drop the price but you better believe they raised the price when the dollar went down.

I thought $1 a shot for steel duck loads was pretty good for the 16ga, the 12ga I get kent 3in at $18/box, or at least I did last year, but the 16ga is a whole different animal.

Challenger Magnums on sale from Cabela's has been my best deal yet at $11.99 per box for 12 gauge 2-3/4" loads. After tax each shell cost me $0.54.
The most I pad for steel ammunition was $21.99 for a box of Black Cloud. I have no idea how well it works, it is still sitting on the ammunition bench. Kent and Challenger are good enough performers as less cost.

Anyone have a source for 16 g in 2 9/16 or is that a lost cause in Canada?
Several US vendors still have product available.
Just thinking about some of my older guns......
