Figured the particular thread may generate more responses here rather than the Ammo Forum .....

Given the limited selection of 16ga factory loads available today - what would be good non-tox brand(s) to seek in Steel and/or other types of loads for small to Malllard size ducks?

I'm aware of Kent Tungsten Matrix, however, your recommendation of any other types will be much appreciated. FYI, reloading isn't an option for me at this point in time. Thanks,

Sorry the only factory load that I have any confidence in is the Kent TM #5's. I am working my way through a case of those, They Work!
The steel loads offered by Remington and Federal kill ducks, but the 2's pattern poorly in my gun and the 4's run out of steam by 30 yds.
I handload bismuth and it works well in 5's and 4's, but don't know of any source of factory bismuth loads.

16ga. Non-tox

I also reload bismuth, 16ag. Win CF hulls, # 5's, #2's and BB's. the BB's and #2's I have only patterned, with good results. The #5's landed me 3 ducks on this years first and only hunt with the 16ga.

Don.

AA is looking for non-reload Factory ammo and sounds as though he doesn't want to use TM for whatever reason (probably price, I don't blame him).

I was out with a fellow Sunday who was shooting Federal 4's out of his 870, the 40 yards ducks must not be reading the ballistic tables cause they died just the same as the closer ones, these were BIG redleg mallards.

Thanks to everyone for the information provided.

Turkeyslayer - Yesterday, I came across the mention of Ultra-shok on Federal site.....offered in #2 & #4 in 15/16oz loads. I am assuming that is one of the load you had referred to in your post above?

And its true about the Tungsten Matrix.....starts to become expensive at one point in time. I still do have some left in 12ga #5 that will meet my needs for the next little while.

AA the 15/16 load is the only 16 gauge Steel load Federal offers. After seeing how well they worked I would not hesitated to use them for ducks at reasonable ranges, especially if you are after smallish ducks with the odd mallard.

My old Remington 1100 16 bore is modified choked. It loves Federal #4 steel. Patterns great and kills well out to 40 yards. Federal #2's hit harder but pattern poorly. They are OK out to about 35 then the pattern thins out. I have used the Kent matrix loads, they are nice but not worth the cost difference over steel. I even have killed big Manitoba jack rabbits at over 40 yards with #4 steel and it just knocked them over. Federal makes a good steel load for the 16.
