I have a 17 bmag hbss with a very rough crown. The worse I have ever seen. Rifle is as of yet unfired.

Just wondering if there is a DIY crown that is relatively simple but effective. Can't say there is a local smith that I can bring it to. Does the brass screw trick and lapping compound really work? Where does one get lapping compound?

Other suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Don't know anyone with a lathe?

Lapping compound? Ask at Lordco or Napa, or a similar auto parts place, not the kind of place that starts out by wanting to know make-model-year-engine or they are lost.

Apparently it works. Never tried it.

Brownell's sells a piloted countersink that can be used to crown. Might be cheaper than a trip to the gunsmith, or it might just be one more cost, plus whatever the guy charges to fix what you messed up, if you do. It's not brain surgery, but if you are not mechanically inclined and equipped with a modicum of common sense...things happen.

Take it to the range, see how it performs.

Solve problems, if they actually ARE problems.

Lots of good shooting, ugly looking guns out there.

No gunsmiths in Brandon? Wolverine is in Virden, what, 80 kms away?

If it was me I would send it back to Savage and tell them to fix it properly. I can't believe the way manufacturers are making things these days. I read an article an hour ago about Marlin defects being shipped out and there were 4 rifles the same in one shipment. Does no one working at these places have a conscience.
Trevj has a good idea as well. Take her out and shoot it to see if it will group or not. I had an old 22 Lakefield when I was a teenager and the crown was beat to hell. Still shot lots of groundhogs with it.

I think I will leave well enough alone! I went to the range today and fired a total of 75 rounds at 50 yards. Did not try 100 as wind was 20 km gusting to 45 ( that's kilometres per hour not miles mind you) at about my 8 o'clock. I was somewhat protected by a side burm.

Anyway average of 12 five shot groups using 4 different kinds of ammo was .506".
Winchester 20 gr=.533, Winchester 25gr=.493, American Eagle 20 gr=.567, Hornady .431"

Pretty decent in my books. No mods to gun. I will buy are brick or two of Hornady in the next few days.

Good points.
I had an issue with a savage, called them up they were more than willing to make it right.
Have/had an issue with a Marlin - and they are replacing it.
Also have some rough looking gear that works great.
Post some pics of the 100yd groups when the wind rests.

Cheers

From all I've read you have one of the better ones. I'd leave it alone and go smash some gophers with it. Need some pics of the destruction. I had a B mag and my buddy bugged me so much I sold it to him. I glass bedded it and it shot 25 gn into a ragged hole at 60 meters and 20 gn into groups as you have described. I think it's a great little cartridge.

Ok so here is the scoup. I shot a total of 41 gophers today. 16 with my WSM and 25 with the HMR. Just to compare I do have 17 HM2, 17 Hornet and 17 Fireball as well. I shot no cattle in this endeavour.

The WSM brings a whole new dimension to the rimfire world. I thought the HMR hit gophers real bad. WSM brings that to a new dimension. Not as much as the 17 Hornet or 17 FB. But close. There were some nice aerial displays today. Most shots were 80-100 yards. Some less. I found the 25 gr bullet less destructive than the 20. The 20 would sometimes give air time to 1-2 feet. The HMR while distructive on gophers was no where near the WSM.

There was about a 35 kph cross wind today. For the distances I was shooting I did have to give some wind with the HMR. Just off to the side a bit. With the WSM I was able to hold right on. I was not able to challenge the distance like I would have liked to as things here are still pretty brown. I had to spot with binos and then spot them with the scope.

Anyway really like the round and am impressed with my Savage. Fills a nice void that I may or may not have! But fun to shoot. I will be stocking up on Hornady 20 Vmax for gophers.

I Will be leaving things alone with my bmag for now. At some point I may do something with the stock so that it is not so flimsy and is not touching the barrel on the left side. But I do love the weight of the rifle as is.

When I glass bedded mine I filled the first 2 cavities in the stock with epoxy. I wedged the stock to the right at the front so the epoxy would set while it was that way and now the barrel is in the center of the stock and a whole lot stiffer.

Archer I may do what I did to a 700 SPS with a flimsey stock few years ago. I dremeled out the stock so I could embed a threaded steel rod in to it. It made the stock pretty solid.
