What do you have & how does it shoot? I was just talking with a buddy and he has 2 17s and does not think they are as good as his 22mags. I can not comment as I have never shot a 17. Thanks Aj
 
I have both a 17mach2, and a 17HMR, and I will put either up against a 22magnum for accuracy. Both rifles average around .300" for five shots at 50 yards, and around .750" at 100 yards.
 
I've got a cz452 varmint. Replaced the factory trigger spring with a lighter spring and now trigger is 1.4 lbs with very little creep. Nothing else done to it. Shoots pretty good:

Sako Quad .6 groups regularly using federal 17 grain, Hornady 17gr and 20 gr. Cheapo Pentax scope and harris bipod, no rear rest. Friend shoots a savage, and it too groups well under an inch. I don't know of many 22magnums that rifle for rifle can keep up with the 17. It has an inherrint accuracy rarely found in a cartridge.
 
The 22 Mag vs 17 HMR has been tested dozens of time and from an accurate rifle such as a Savage bolt-action, a 17 HMR will typically delivers the same size of groups at 150 yards that a 22 Mag produces at 100-125 yards.

The difference in accuracy is not mind-boggling but a Savage 93R17 BTVS will shoot 3/4 MOA 5 shot groups all day long at 100 yards.
Some of the best 22lr Match rifles will shoot 1/6 MOA 5 shot groups at 100 yards but that's another story.

I absolutely love 17HMR but sold my super accurate Savage 93R17 BTVS because of ammo costs.

My Savage .22WMR will do comparable size groups to my .17 at 100. The group size with the .17 will be smaller, but that's because the round itself is smaller.
 
I've never gotten as tight a group with my .22WMR that I did with my CZ .17, or Savage .17. Having said that, I sold both .17s, and only kept the .22WMR. Better on Ontario-sized small game, ammo a little bit cheaper.

Day in and day out, I would be surprised if the average shooter can group a .22WMR as well as an average shooter could group a .17HMR. I just think bullets are moving so fast, ammo is so consistent, etc. It's the least useful rimfire choice to me and for my needs, but yeah...I'll be getting another. :)
 
I have a marlin 917 and it is more inherently accurate than any .22 or 22 mag i've ever shot. It'll hold 1/2" at 100 yards if my hands are steady and there's a consistent wind. The 6lb trigger took some getting used to, but then i took er apart and replaced the return spring with one from a pen. Now it's about 3lbs and is a LOT nicer to shoot.
