If anyone had any doubt as to the efficacy of a 17 centerfire on a coyote, this seems pretty definitive. The particular 17 in use is the 17 predator - think of it as a 17 rem 'improved.' Shooting a 30 grain bullet around 4,000fps (about the same as a 204 with the 32 grain bullets, considered by some to be a 'poor' coyote choice)

A survey of the local hard-core, heavy-hitters, (they are all on the A-list for government control work where they get PAID to shoot coyotes) reveals their cal. and load choices:
.243 Win 87gr.
.240 Wby 105 gr.
6.5-284 142 gr.
.270 Win 130 gr.
.300 Win Mag 165 gr.

Don't see any .22's .20's .17's.........hmmmm..

good hunting

None of them own a skinning knife either proabably.

for flat out killing it would be tough to beat a 243 or a 6-284. not fur friendly though, but they shoot flat and buck the wind good

Bingo.

That .17 certainly seems to work, and is probably a fine killer on any solid hit. But then again, they wouldn't post any video of the ones that got away. Coyotes are tough. IMHO, you gotta choose between knocking their socks off with even marginal shots (like the pro's obviously prefer) or keeping hides. You can't have your cake and eat it too.;)

On another note, whoever's doing the shooting in that vid seems pretty handy at it... lots of moving targets getting bang-flopped.

Nice video. I'd like to see a video of the ones that got away though.

For me, I'd have more faith in .22 cal. on up for coyotes and bigger varmints.

Really? Do you know this because you are looking up from the B-list?:p
Seriously though, if the government is calling in coyote control it is likely to be in semi-urban areas, and some guy is going to go poping of a 300 Winnie with 165's?

Two guys that I shoot with are on some kind of list, I don't know if it's the A-list, but they were called out to shoot some yotes in the Canmore area. They both use .223's exclusively (Hornady V-max) and sell the hides.
