Hey guys, I want honest opinions on 17 fire vs 17 rem. I'm left handed and left hand 17 fireballs are out there more common and 17 rems aren't. For shooting coyotes out to 300 yards, will a 17 fireball with a well placed shot work? Or should I convert it to a 17 rem and shoot that? Or just buy 2 and have a 17 rem and a 17 fireball and just play with them both? Both really neat xalibers and look super fun.

For Coyotes at 300 yards, I would consider stepping up to the .204" caliber. The 204Ruger or 20 Tactical would be my choice.

why I have shot a few with my old 17rem years ago ,dam near cut a fox clean in two at 150 yards ,nothing wrong with the 17rem she will get the job done if you can get your side of it done ,Dutch

I have a 204 at the moment and am not so happy about it. Really wanting a 17. I have unlimited 17 fireball brass so that isn't an issue to find in both calibers. Maybe both would be a good idea... Hmmm

I'd vote for the rem if you must use a 17. Personally I'd got 204 or fast 22. I've seen some epic fails of 17s when the shoulder is hit. A long tracking job and a painful suffering death. I know most ppl just want them dead and don't care but I believe in using enough gun to get it done every time not just when everything is right. 300 yards those lil bullets bounce around in the wind a lot. Best of luck

17 Rem will easily kill a coyote dead past 300 yards if you do your part. I have done it numerous occasions. A lot of people out there have never owned or even shot one, just read about them on the net some were and have no personal experience....

Actually thinking about picking one up again, sold mine a few years a go, its a super fun little round.

I have owned too many of both to remember them all. 17 Fireball or Rem and that coyote is dead as a stump.

If you make a ####ty shot the dog will walk I don't care what you use. A friend of mine put a 270 win round through one this year and it was a bad shot and it walked away.

You will need to clean the 17 rem a bit more frequently. No big deal just be aware. I also ran the FB down speed wise with trailboss to 2000 FPS for small around the farm vermin.

I also own 204 Ruger but honestly 17 Rem or FB will always be one of my favourites.

Remington has the fireball back as a calibre option for the model 7 for 2015 so you could have one by next winter. The fireball isnt that much of a step down from the full size Remington. I have both and a .17 ackley along with a .17 hornady hornet and the gains between each step up are pretty small.

Cool..I'd like a model 7 in fireball. Excellent round for fur.

Cheers!!

I shoot a rem 700 17 fireball and love it. I have shot yotes out to only 200 yards with mine. Havnt had a chance for anything longer... Normally if I am targeting yotes I use my 220 swift and save the 17 fb for bobcat and lynx as it does very little fur damage. The 17 fb is probably one of my "most fun" guns to shoot!

It's definitely the most fun gun that I own. Any time I'm going for a drive in the country it's the one I take. I like how crows think they are safely out of range and then you see a puff of feathers in the scope.

They are addictive. Most guys see that little tiny pill on top of a case and figure that a bullet that small can't kill mice. But when you are burning more powder weight than bullet weight and watching your hits through the scope because there is no recoil you get to see where the fun part comes in. The only time I don't have one 17 on board when going for dogs or gophers is when the wind is really blowing. Those little bullets sure won't buck the wind.
