well Remington has indeed introduced the 17 Fireball (aka 17 Mach IV) and is introducing it in a stainless fluted CDL similar to the 30-06 100th anniversary edition.

Where can I read more about this? Anything that would make somebody pick this over just a normal 17 hmr? Is this caliber going to last?

It's reloadable and therefore can be tinkered with.:) The 17 Remington and other 17 Wildcats have always had a small but strong following.

Well it already has a 40+ year history in 17 mach IV trim

how would the wind play on a 20 grain pill @4000 fps? can't see a real good use for this that already isn't being done by the 204 Ruger, 221 Fireball, 22-250, 223, 220 Swift, 17 hmr, etc. I guess it boils down to what floats your boat. I'm more interested in the Model 700 Alaskan Ti in 270 WSM and the Model Seven stainless fluted camo stock in 204 Ruger

The 20gr .172 vmax has a similar BC to the 40gr .224 vmax, so the 17 fireball at 4k would drift the same with the 20 gr as a 22-250 with the 40 gr at 4k.

Both will drift a lot more than the 204 with it's 32gr at 4200fps

.185 is the BC of the 17 cal 20 gr Vmax

.200 is the BC of the 22 cal 40 gr Vmax

so, both launched @ 4000 fps, the drift in a 10 mph crosswind @ 400 yards is :

17 Fireball ~ 24.3"

22-250 ~ 21.9"

keep in mind, the 17 FB burns half the powder

24.3 vs 21.9 at 400 yards... so ~1/2 MOA of difference. The difference in drift between these is within the margin of error for most guns & shooters.

Hornady makes three, a 20 gr Vmax, 25 gr Vmax, and 25 gr Hollowpoint

Its about time Nosler makes a 17 cal Ballistic Tip me thinks

Tod ,
Aren't they also going to offer it in the Model 7 as well? If they are it would be an interesting walking varmit rifle.

yep, Model Seven CDL, Model 700 CDL stainless fluted, 700 SPS, 700 SPS varmint, and 700 VSF

only the 20 grain Accutip load, which is a shame as people are going to try it on coyotes and I dont think it will gain a good reputation with that load for predators
