17 Fireball

It is a neck down 221 fireball. Super flat shooter, lazer like accuracy. Definetly a barrel burner though, have a friend that burned his out with HOT reloads and has been searching for another one for years. Not easy to find. Remington stopped chambering for this years ago. Ammo is not easy to find either.

It is not the barrel burner many think it is...

I shot a 17 Remington AI for years and a 17 -222 before that. It depends on the barrel maker. Mine were both Shilen barrels and lasted quite well. The worst barrel burner I had was a 17 Ackley Hornet... a dinky little case. That was a Douglas barrel and it showed excessive wear in 400 rounds... Douglas replaced that barrel and the second barrel did the same. I think their heat treatment was off. 12 grains of powder shouldn't do that.

I think the 17 Fireball would be a great little round... but not in a precision rifle - more of a varmint round.

I have one made by Cooper and it's a fun gun. Good for coyotes up to 300 yards. Never heard of it being referred to as a barrel burner before. Saubier.com is a good place to go for small caliber related info.

How does it feed from the magazine?

Not a barrel burner unless you confuse it with 17 Rem which is an entirely different round. 18gr of powder is t going to burn out anything in a hurry.

Remington still makes rifles in 17 Fireball. I bought one new less than a year ago. In fact Epps had a bunch if them on sale at the time.

It is a neat little cartridge. Kind of a pain to deal with as none of the regular loading and cleaning tools fit.

17 Fireball is not a barrel burner! My Cooper 38 had 800 rounds through it before it was cleaned the first time! It would still plunk 3 25gr Berger HP's into less than 1/4" at 100 yds and is even better now that I cleaned it. I also briefly owned a Remington 700 SPS in the 17 Fireball for a while that was stupid accurate for a bone stock 700 (between 1/4" and 1/2" usually closer to the smaller end) but I sold it because it didn't feed very well.

Are you confusing the 17 fireball with the older 17 Remington?
The Fireball was only introduced in 2007.

The weird thing about my Rem 700 17 Fireball is it has a ridiculously long barrel. Something like 26 or 27 inches long. Seems kind of pointless in a case that small. The long barrel produces a strange effect when shot off bags with a high power scope. After the shot I can see the rifle vibrating through the crosshairs for a moment. Never seen that on anything else.

I'm also interested in .17 fireball. Couldn't find anything for ammo in Canada online though. Some stiff in the sates, but it looked pretty pricy and from what I've read importing ammo isn't the easiest thing to do. I think Prophet River has dies though if your a reloader.

Oink. I have 400. I've only loaded 200 of them and will wait till they are unusable and start on the others.
