First chance to really try out the .17 HM2/Mach2 on gophers. Compared to a .22LR even with Stingers it is utterly destructive and increases hit probability by at least 50% at any range over about 75 yards. Bucks the wind surprisinly well, far better than .22LR. Whereas gophers certainly don't like the .22LR, I am certain they absolutely despise the .17 HM2. The Stingers "popped" them pretty good, but the .17 HM2 "misted" quite a few and sent the others flipping head over heels. I am considering having a .17 bbl installed on my BRNO/CZ, of the same contour, etc. so that I may swap it back and fort as I please. The reason is I really like the BRNO in all aspects, except the backward safety, and it doesn't appear a .17HM2 is listed in calibers for any current CZs. The .17HM2 I have is a P.O.S. Savage heavy bbl but I got it sooo cheap brand new that I figgered it was a good way to see if the caliber had any merrit. At the local rip-off dealer the .17HM2 Hornady fodder ran just under $8/50, quite a bit cheaper than the .17 HMR which they sell for about $18/50. Loves it...:D

Do you find it hard to find ammo for the HM2? I have an HMR, but I have never seen HM2 ammo on the shelves around here. Sounds like it would be a good gopher getter for approx 1/2 the price of HMR's.

I have a CZ 452 mach2 and I love it. I think most who shoot one think highly of it but are worried about ammo. it seems it only suffers from lack of marketing and too many went to the bigger 17. I bought 30,000 rds so i should be Ok for a while. ;)
I like it so much I might upgrade to a Anschutz or a Cooper if they show up. I'm not sure if many are made now but the rifles seem to be on sale quite a bit in many brands.

There wasn't any on the shelves locally, but they ordered in 2 bricks, I took one and the other is still there when I need it. As I bought the gun there, they didn't put up much of a fight, very little in fact, about ordering some ammo. I explained to them it was stupid to try to sell a rifle when you don't have the ammo for it. I don't think it would be an issue in a bigger store in a bigger center to find it on the shelf, but if it's available they can order it. I shoot some other oddball calibers as well so I guess I'm tolerant of ignorance and deal with it...;)

Good to hear Yama. I have been using the .17HMR this spring on Columbian Ground Squirrels here in BC and have been very impressed with it. I haven't even uncased my .22's or my .204Ruger as I have been having too much fun with the .17.
