17 HMR ammo review

Not ragging at all, winter is finally here in Ontario. :) I'm still dumb enough to shoot outside though...and I have some load tests to test this weekend with my .223. Looking forward to it, and I'm not.

You mention a rest/rear bag taking some of the challenge out of it and I don't disagree completely...but when I'm at the range, I'm not looking for a challenge. I'm looking to set-up my rifle for hunting, so, knowing (definitively) that the rifle and the scope are looking in the same direction is pretty key. Now that I'm reloading .223, I want to know what weight of bullet, what powder charge works best for my rifle...and that's pretty darned important too. Once that is done, I'm pretty much done with the shooting range...and my hunting is done with a Harris bipod. Misses are pretty rare with factory ammo, I suspect the reloaded stuff will be even better. Why use a rest at the range and not the same bipod~there is no shooting bench where I varmint hunt, so it's apples and oranges. I practice off a bipod, prone as well...but only after I know I have the rifle set-up and the loads sorted-out.

There is no right/wrong answer with respect to a rest...use one or don't use one. They don't guarantee a one-hole group, that's for sure. My only teacher was shooting an air rifle and .22lr for more than 30 years, and tens of thousands of rounds. My 19 year old nephew can shoot about as well as I can though, and he's been at it about 5 years. lol

Shooting off a bipod I normally get 1" with hornady vmax and 1.25" with federal or cci tnt winter or summer. Off a good rest I was shooting 22lr brass at 80 yards 3 out of 5 shots with a 3-9 power scope. My groups at 25 yards look close to what yours do. They also look similar at 100 yards.
For shooting outside its not to cold very often. -25 is where I draw the line at to cold. But different for everyone

Breathe in, Breathe out slowing to half way then hold, and fire.

I found that works best for myself, And I shoot off a Bi-pod.

That'll make ya feel better ;) , That was also a very high wind day! vertical deviation is quite nice for a little 17 with factory ammo.

That is the best of all the Hornady ammo available 15.5 ,17 and 20 gr. 2 separate groups obviously.

And the best part, I'm a piss poor shot!!

Nice effort but a ammo review for this caliber needs to be done at 100 yards. At 25 yards you should be able to put it into pretty much the same hole. What club are you shooting it at?
