Does anyone know if there is a FMJ round available for this calibre. I was out shooting harp seals with my savage and when we skinned them you could see the polymer tip was exploding in the blubber. The only way to kill them with that bullet is head shot (not always easy). Maybe the 20 gr round would be better but just checking to see if anyone knows of a FMJ.

There was some rumbling of a fmj load but I have not seen it (could have been a hoax too) But I did test the 20 grain Hornady xtp. I shot it into wet phone books it way ou penetrated the 17 grain v-max. The 17 esentially blew up on contact making an 1.5" or so crater where the 20 grain load penetrated 4-5" and formed into a neat mushroom.

How big is a Harp seal.

Harp seals can be pretty large biggest probably around 200 lbs, but being a marine mammal have sofer bone than any animals on land which is why a 17 can kill them with a head shot. I only use it if they are close to the boat but for anything outside of 40-50 yds I break out the 22-250 tikka and that does a great job on them. Actually blew the jaw off one yesterday. My hunting partner blew the top of the skull of another with his 220 swift.

I performed the same test with my Savage HMR

I used a soup can with a size #4 pull-up rolled up and stuffed into it. I then soaked it in water to get it to expand and shot it with various rounds. I found the Hornaby 20Gr inflicted the largest hole out the back end of the can at 100yds.....quite impressive really.

But I felt the Remington vMax kept the tightest pattern (although splitting hairs here).

Can they put polymer tips on .22 lr bullets? and if so why don't they?

It could be that a .22 LR is not moving fast enough to achieve the explosive expansion that a lighter, faster bullet could....therefore there is little point in the extra expense.
