17 HMR Ammo ?

Before you go buy some boxes of each brand you can find then shoot 10 each at a target pick up tons of boxes of whatever works the best. Some .17hmr can be very picky .Bring the left over boxes of the ammo that does not shoot the best from your gun to the shoot and sell/trade it away.

Hornady 17 grain V-Max is a great choice, and I think considered to be widely liked by HMR rifles. My Savage loved it, but didn't like 20 grain. My CZ likes both, but my best group is with the 20 grain. I have about 2 boxes of 20, and 10 of 17...I'm in denial. :) I've yet to hunt with the 20, but the 17 does a nice job on big Ontario groundhogs.

I was under the impression that all 17HMR ammo was made in the same factory on the same equiptment with the same components except for the different colour tips. Would it not all shoot the same?

You are only partly correct. All of the 17hmr loads are made in the same factory, but the load recipes are slightly different for the various brand names.

I buy Federals because Can. Tire stocks them but I've tried 20gr XTPs and 17 gr TNTs with equal accuracy, under 1".

At almost $19 per box, Canadian Tire is the last place that I would buy 17HMR ammunition. I can buy Winchester Supreme at Walmart for $14.47, and Super X for $13.47.

I'll use anything but 20 grain hollow points. My CZ refuses to feed them reliably. The Winchester HMR Stubble mentioned are my top choice ATM, they are accurate, available, and Wally World has dropped the price from ~$18 to ~$14 per box.

Thats good to know.

I picked up a few boxes for $13 when Bass Pro Rockyview had a sale but I need a lot more before I am ready for summer.

The $19 that CDN tire sells for is just to much but $14 regular price is more bearable.

As to the OP's question.

I shoot any 17HMR ammo that is loaded with the V-Max bullet on gophers. Like previously mentioned, all HMR ammo is made by CCI.

The differences between the various brands isn't huge, but with my Cooper LVT there is a slight difference in accuracy. I have tried three lot#s of Hornady, two lot#s of Winchester Supreme, and one lot# of Federal, all with the 17gr v-max.The Federal loads are averaging around .400" for five shots at 50 yards, the Hornady loads are closer to .350", and the Winchesters are under .300".The Winchesters routinely put three shots inside .150", with a few .200" or better five shot groups.
