17 hmr Cleaning rod - help me find a good one.

I use the Otis kit on my 17 HMR. All that was available locally was the 'cheap' micro sized one.

So far so good. As mentioned by a previous poster, the 2" patches that come with the kit can bind in the .17. I use smaller patches - although a smaller square one doesn't have the same cleaning effect as the round ones threaded through the brass eye.

Despite the limitations, I'm happy with the Otis kit. It fits in the range tool box, and it means I don't have to thread tiny little rods together and hope they don't scratch the bore.

My 2¢.

Here is a trick I picked up at 17hmr.com. instead of a brush or jag place a Q-tip brand q-tip in the end of the rod. The reason to go with the name brand is they are a little larger in diameter. You have to cut most of the shank off of the q-tip so make 2 from each one. I hope this helps.

I don't understand why eveyone keeps pushing carbon, aluminum, or brass rods through the bore. They all pick up debris/metal/grit and wear on the rifling unless you take EXTREME care not to touch it. Boresnake makes a pull through brass brushed cleaner for basically all common calibers. Buy a couple of them and you'll never look back.
