Well, my Savage .17HMR came in, but my options were kinda limited in terms of cleaning rod. I picked up an uncoated steel rod for the mean time, but I'd really prefer to use a coated rod. Can anyone recommend a source? Also - any suggestions for a bore-guide?

Wholesale Sports and Russell sports both carry the one-piece, coated Dewey rods. I don't know what kind of bearings are in the rod handle, but they work great - no resistance and no slop.

I can confirm that the boresnake is a great option for cleaning the .17 HMR - it also does a good job for the .17 M2 and the .177 pellet guns.

Side note: I've heard that over-cleaning a rimfire barrel is less-than-advised.

Over-cleaning any barrel is never a good idea. I'm willing to bet more barrels are destroyed by agressive cleaning then are ever shot-out.

Our gunshops sell both the one piece Dewey rods for $39.99 or the one piece Kleen Bore that are the same for $13.99
No doubt I bought the Kleen Bore. They also have a muzzle crown guide on them, not that I would recommend ever cleaning from the muzzle.

I've got a cheap kleen-bore 2 piece steel rod, and a snake.

That said, I haven't cleaned my Savage .17 in 3000 rounds. Still shoots fine.

You haven't cleaned the barrel, or you haven't cleaned the barrel/action?!

I tend to run a patch through the barrel every 100 or so with my homemade patch worm. and I clean the chamber with a q-tip after every outing (mine's a semi-auto)
