17 hmr on game birds

Sure, what else do you use a .17 for after gopher season is over?

While not a particularly good defensive choice against an enraged, charging chicken, the .17hmr will dispatch an unsuspecting chicken with a carefully placed head shot.

Kinda ruins the trophy mount though.......

I use a marlin hb 17 hmr and my son (10yrs old) uses a savage. They are super accurate and find head shots quite easy to ranges that get quit tough with a 22LR. The confidence it builds in youngsters is great

Shot several ruffed grouse (chickens) with mine while trapping. Head/neck and you got meat in the pot. What I liked was that with my scoped NEF single I could shoot them from wherever I first saw them. With a good steadied hold 50 60 yards is not unrealistic. I aimed just below the head and either gottem in the head, upper neck or missed. No meat damaged and no chance of a wounded bird getting away. I was using Hornady V max rounds.

cheers Darryl
