17 HMR options or recomendations

I've decided i would like to try a 17 hmr rifle for small game / plinking. After looking around i see prices range from $350 to $2000 ish. not really looking to go high end but half of that would be ok. I would like a bolt action and sub 8 lbs with optic. thoughts or suggestions?

My only 17hmr is a Tikka tx1. It shoots tiny little bug holes with every brand of 17gr or 20gr ammo. Great value for $$.

I have never owned a CZ457, but have had several 452's and now a 453 in .22.
Had a CZ455 in 17HMR and it shot well and good enough for hunting gophers and such.
Rabbits would not be an issue ///the only issue is ammo $$ especially if one is just going to plink at paper.
Buy once and let your wallet recover and Chive On.
Tight Groups and Good Hunting.

You can see from my for sale adds I shoot a lot of 17hmr. My personal recommendation would be either a CZ 457 MTR as it has a match barrel but is on the heavier side. So I think you would be best off with a Tikka T1X. It is the same as my ace but you will save a lot of money as the ace stock is not needed, everything else is the same, ie barrel and action. Honestly the Tikka mags are much easier to load also.. I Highly recommend the T1X... Great groups with either.. If you do not buy a CZ 457 with match barrel, the Tikka is BETTER hand down.

The 1st on I had back in 2005 was a tack driver (regrettably sold it) - the next three I purchased in the last 9 years were terrible couldn't find one that was consistant. I would recommend the CZ 8 days a week.

here on the EE ($1200 - $1500).

Fit , Finish & Feel the best man.

I loved my CZ 457 Synthetic 17 HMR but ended up selling it and replaced it with a Winchester Xpert 17 WSM. The ammo seems to be available lately and I love the performance boost!
 
I've had a few savage 93Rs. They all shot good. I currently have a CZ 455 American. 17hmr and it's very accurate. Handy little rifle to carry, I have a 4-12x40 Redfield scope on it. Here it is next to a Toz .22lr

Yea, let's continue to buy from a company that let its subsidiary work with our federal govt to steal our legally purchased firearms. That sounds like a good idea to pay money to people who want to take our guns and our rights. :mad:

There are lots of other companies to choose from, that did not get involved with the CDN govt confiscation plan. 🤷‍♂️
 
I'd put in another vote for a Savage 93R17. I've had a 21" FVSS HB stainless version with laminate stock and an FV-SR version. Both were incredibly accurate, inexpensive, and shot lights out. Didn't really have use for a 17, but don't be shy about these guys.
 
As lever30 said, the savage 93r17 is phenomenal option. Especially the heavier barrelled version. I had a stainless thumbhole, heavy barrel and it was incredibly accurate, and a joy to shoot.

Another option could be the heavy barrel sako quad. Mine will absolutely stack round after round out there, and no issues with feeding etc.

I also own a cz457 and I am meh on it - not for any political reason but more for weak ejection and issues there, especially when you put a rail on. I am 10/10 more likely to grab my sako w/ a 17hmr barrel than put a 17hmr barrel on my cz

I have a Anschutz, a sako, a Tikka and a 457 build that’s in progress with Lilja barrel. The others stated are basically stock. I can’t speak for the 457 yet obviously but 9 out of 10 times I reach for the Tikka, it shoots everything very well but in saying that there is only 2 actual manufacturers of hmr ammo that I’m aware of, I may be wrong. Regardless, the Tikka shoots great, the mags are low profile and I work very well. I have never had one misfire, light strike, ejection issue, extraction issue etc…nothing. It just works and have fired thousands and thousands of rounds through it. Have had the barrel so bloody hot more then I care to admit and it just keeps going. I clean it religiously but it does gets used to say the least. Triggers are great. Can’t really say enough about my experience with it. Just my opinion though.
Head to your local and handle a couple different options. Regardless of what you pick I’m sure you’ll love shooting the hmr. They sure do make a mess of gophers!
 
Another option you can look at is the Savage in a Mach 2 with a heavy barrel. My son shoots one and it shoots lights out, not quite the reach of the hmr but the savage is affordable and ammo is a bit cheaper!
